Dr. J. Vernon Steinle’s vision for a new, post-war research and development laboratory building for S. C. Johnson & Son Inc., and Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for a new kind of skyscraper, converged in the SC Johnson Research Tower in Racine, Wisconsin.

Some 4500 people from around the world tour Wright’s SC Johnson Administration Building next door every year, but they can only gaze at the Tower because it closed in 1981...

Pomegranate is now shipping copies of my new book, Frank Lloyd Wright's SC Johnson Research Tower, to booksellers. The book had its genesis in the spring of 2009 when I showed photos of the inside of the Tower to company tour guides, many of whom had never been inside the building, which closed in 1981 (I erroneously set the closing as 1982 in "Wright in Racine"). SC Johnson gave me access to their Tower archives last July, and the book was underway.

The text and photos take you through the development of the Tower's design; guide you through construction (with a centerspread of archival company photos); show you the inside of the Tower in the 1950s and today; and discuss why the Tower closed, and obstacles to its reopening.

I was delighted to work with Pomegranate again on this book; they published my previous books as well. I thank Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer for his foreword to the Research Tower book. I also thank SCJ and the people who worked on, and in the Tower, whom I interviewed.

The PrairieMod website interviewed me about the book earlier this summer. Their article will follow in about a week.

The book retails for $19.95, and is the same size as my book about the Hardy House. You can order the book from local bookstores, museum gift shops, or from on-line booksellers (although I hope you will first consider supporting local shops).

I will be presenting an illustrated talk about the Tower in Mason City, Iowa, Friday September 10, as the community helps mark the centennial of Wright's Park Inn and City National Bank. I will also discuss the Tower, as an addition to Wright's SC Johnson Administration Building, at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy meeting in Cincinnati September 25.
