Few people in the world of Wright are as well known as Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer. Officially, he is Director of the Archives of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Unofficially, he is a man with a gentle smile, the remnants of a New England accent, and the author of countless published (and still in progress) books about Wright and his work. I was photographing Bruce in February at the Wright exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation's Quarterly when a museum worker questioned whether I had permission from "the foundation" to take his picture. I gestured to Bruce, and replied, "He IS the Foundation." Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, Milwaukee Art Museum, February 3, 2011 Bruce was in Racine last week to attend a Foundation conference at Wingspread about Wright licensing and related issues. I was surprised to learn that this was his first visit to Wingspread, which Wright designed in 1937 for H.F. Johnson Jr. Below, published with Bruce's permission, are photos of his visit. I appreciate his allowing me to photograph him and publish the photos. Bruce photographs Wingspread:
Wisconsin can be chilly even in late April, hence the ski cap.
Bruce prepares to address the conference, near portraits of H.F. Johnson Jr., left, and Frank Lloyd Wright before speaking in the living room at Wingspread.
A light moment with Doug Volker, the Foundation's Director of Licensing and Product Development, before Volker introduced him.
Bruce is moved almost to tears telling conferees how seeing Wingspread affected him. Apologizing to me, he said that photographs cannot do it justice. Conferees were given copies of Bruce's book, "Frank Lloyd Wright Drawings," and lined up to have him sign it after his talk. Ann MacGregor, executive director of Wright on the Park, thanks Bruce for signing her book on the page with drawings of Wright's City National Bank and Park Inn Hotel in Mason City. MacGregor is one of the key people in the restoration of the buildings, which reopen next month.
