From the federal government ... A Health Savings Account is an alternative to traditional health insurance; it is a savings product that offers a different way for consumers to pay for their health care. HSAs enable you to pay for current health expenses and save for future qualified medical and retiree health expenses on a tax-free basis. You must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) to be able to take advantage of HSAs. An HDHP generally costs less than what traditional health care coverage costs, so the money that you save on insurance can therefore be put into the Health Savings Account. You own and you control the money in your HSA. Decisions on how to spend the money are made by you without relying on a third party or a health insurer. You will also decide what types of investments to make with the money in the account in order to make it grow. http://www.treas.gov/offices/public-affairs/hsa/faq_basics.shtml Wednesday October 10, 2007

Had a bad week? Colleagues driving you nuts? Did you lose your keys, spill coffee in your keyboard, back into the boss’ SUV in the parking lot? Did someone else steal your lunch, your wallet? Maybe you had a root canal and had to go back to work with your face all numb, unable to even drink your Dew without it dribbling down your chin. Maybe your car broke down on Spring Street just as you hit the hill where every angry driver is going 45 mph. Maybe you got a hair cut and "something different" is something awful. Maybe you’ve worked for 14 straight days and your house is falling apart because you haven’t been there. Whatever your reason for needing a weekend, speak your mind. "I need a weekend because ..."

The letters, flyers, announcements and invitations have been arriving in my mailbox (both e-mail and snail mail) almost weekly for the last six months. The Class of ’97 10-year reunion is coming up later in October. I’ve been cordially invited to attend — and cordially invited to make a donation to the Class of ’97 reunion gift fund. I’ve also been cordially invited to join the planning committee, attend area alumni pre-reunion parties, buy tickets for the coinciding Homecoming game, and purchase a lot of merchandise from the university store. I’m not doing any of those things. And I’m not sure about going back for the reunion, either. It was a big school. I only recognize a few names on the regularly updated Web site of who’s coming. I keep in touch with some friends and old classmates, and that’s good enough for me. (Besides, my husband has joked he’ll only go with me if Zach Braff will be there. Fellow member of the NU Class of ’97. Really not sure if it’s on his October calendar or not.) I admit, though, I do like to read the Class Notes when the monthly alumni magazine arrives. So-and-so is now partner at Such-and-Such Firm. So-and-so just published a study in This-or-That Journal. He’s now a writer for "America’s Most Wanted" (Really?). She got married, he has a new son/daughter named Holden/Mallory. But sometimes those four years of college seem like the strangest four years of my life — throwing me into a career that I chose when I was 17, for heaven’s sake. (And costing me $250 a month ever since ...) Do you keep tabs on old classmates? Do you attend class reunions? Do you feel a big connection to your college or university? Do you "network" among fellow alums?
