After members of the Fourth Estate interrogated Brett Favre for 1 hour and 15 minutes at his retirement press conference, you would have thought there was finally closure on his startling decision to hang up his cleats.
Not so.
For this veteran scribe, there are still several questions left unanswered, questions that need to be answered before I’m absolutely convinced ole No. 4 quit because the fire in his belly had gone out.
Questions like:
* Why didn’t Packers GM Teddy "Bear’’ Thompson make a concerted attempt to dissuade Favre into returning for another season?
Thompson said it was "presumptuous’’ to think he could change Favre’s mind, but Thompson couldn’t have been serious, could he?
Thompson should have exhausted every means possible into coaxing Favre to keep playing. After all, Favre wasn’t just another aging player whose best days were behind him.
I contend Favre has never had a better season than his final one and, at worst, is still ranks as one of the top five QBs in the NFL. He is, at 38, still a difference-maker.
Knowing how close the Packers came to being in the Super Bowl last season, and knowing how they could be a title contender again next year, Thompson should have gotten down on his knees and begged Favre to come back.
Thompson would have to be delusional to believe the Packers’ chances of winning and winning big next season are better with an unproven, injury-prone Aaron Rodgers than a Hall-of-Fame in-waiting Favre.
* Why did new Packers president Mark Murphy confidently declare last week that Favre was coming back and that he fully expected Favre to make his announcement public a short time later?
Do you think Murphy would have been so irresponsible to make such a declaration unless he was thoroughly convinced Favre was returning for his 18th pro season?
* What was Thompson referring to when he said Favre’s decision to retire was a "complicated situation?’’
Favre was adamant that he quit because he was "tired.’’ Being tired hardly qualifies as a "complicated situation.’’
* What prompted Bus Cook, Favre’s agent, to say in an interview that the Packers brass was more receptive about his client leaving the Packers than staying?
Unlike Favre, who has an allegiance to the Packers and wasn’t going to bad-mouth the organization that has been so good to him, Cook doesn’t have such ties. It’ll be interesting to see if someone can cajole Cook into expanding on his comment.
* Where were all of Favre’s teammates at the press conference?
Yes, I know virtually all of them had bolted Green Bay as soon as the NFC Championship game was over, but there are things called planes where you can get to outposts even like Green Bay from anywhere in the U.S. within hours.
* Why did Favre mention he would likely stay in touch with McCarthy – and didn't say anything about staying in contact with Thompson?
Perhaps Randy Moss can shed some insight on that one.
Good Lord Gery - give it up. Please stop this madness. The guy is retired. The Moss crap is just that, crap. Did you ever think that the agent they share was trying to get one hand to help the other hand? Who wins - the agent with his cut of the action! Moss turned down a larger offer from the Eagles - why don't you investigate why he returned to the Pat's??? Did you attempt to contact Moss to get his opinion on record regarding his free agent negotiations? Favre gave his all for 17 seasons - and has a Super Bowl victory and numerous individual records to show for his efforts. Let's move on - we have a new chapter of Packer history starting. I cannot believe that I am saying this, but please post some Milwaukee Bucks news. The rehash of this past week is getting old and just serves as another excuse for you to bash TT, McCarthy and Murphy. It's funny, but we did not read this sort of stuff from the beat writers from the MJS, McGinn, Silverstein, Wolfey and D'Amato (ex Racine Journal sportswriter)...why is that? Why don't they have an ax to grind with TT, McCarthy and Murphy as it appears you do? Put your ax away - you might chop off something you might want to use in the future.
I think Brett is still under contract with GB. Wouldn't he have to be traded to play for another team? I don't think he can just 'go play for someone else'.

and this is exactly why you are not the GM of the Packers...
Randy Moss?
Your reaching... move on.

I am constantly amazed at ineptness..... Favre said POINT BLANK "there is nothing that the Packers could have said to him to convince him to come back". Why are people like yourself and the dullards on the local sportsradio shows so hung up on trying to make some sort of conspiracy or blaming someone, instead of honoring the mans decision and recognizing what an incredible career he had? His obsession to win had gotten to the point where he wasn't able to justify all that it took to still play at the level he had achieved, thus the juice was no longer worth the squeeze. He did love to win, and was still one of the best QB's in the game, but when a GAME is no longer fun, you move on from it. The main story you could have picked up on, was that he was coming home on sunday nights and not even taking the rest of the day on sunday to enjoy a win, but jumping on the computer and scouting for the following week. This is the kind of behavior that will pull a married couple apart, the husband who walks through the door and goes right back to work, even though he just came from the office. As a man who watched his wife go through cancer, I think the realization came to him that he was sacrificing too much for a game that he had nothing left to prove in, and it is time to enjoy life and spend some time with his family before he lost somebody else. I think that is why he said he was going to do "nothing" now.....he didn't want his family to look like the reason he retired. It also would not surprise me if it came out that Deanna has had a relapse with cancer, or possibly had a scare that made the Favres take a good long look at what is important in life. Either way, I will have to honor Brett Lorenzo Favre at his word, not to mention his body language, and believe that he was tired, and just didn't want to do it anymore. For all he has done for us as fans of his, it is the least we can do...respect his word.
hey just as brett gave all he has and then some we count our blessings for him and his family. he oues us nothing it us that oue him neuf

2 things Gery.....it's BUS Cook, not buzz......and why would Favre talk about keeping in contact with Thompson? Thompson isn't someone who ever coached him, he is the guy who puts the personnel of the franchise together, thus they haven't had a whole lot of contact.....certainly not like Brett had with his coaches.
Bye Brett we will miss you...But good luck and God Bless....

I'm convinced that Ted Thompson had something to do with Favre retiring. Had Harlan still been there he may have been able to control him but it's a whole new crew in GB now. Ever since he came to Green Bay he has been weeding out everyone that was not his "hand picked player". Did you see how unhappy Deanna was sitting next to him at the news conference and there has been no mention of a ceremony to honor Favre any time in the near future. I wish someone would come out and tell the truth. I don't think it will be Brett.
Once again as Brewpackman said "I am constantly amazed at ineptness..... Favre said POINT BLANK "there is nothing that the Packers could have said to him to convince him to come back". We already know the truth.
Also, knock off the Teddy "Bear’’ Thompson name calling you sound like you are 10 years old.
ok here's a question. if this "veteran scribe" wanted to know so bad, why wasn't he at the press conference, asking the questions. is he not even allowed in the Packers facilities, or do they not want to talk to him, or is he just lazy? i'm seriously wondering
Exactly, it's sort of interesting that the "veteran scribe" was not at the press conference. The JT didn't want to pay for him to go, he is not allowed, or he chose not to go. Bad journalism not to go to the press conference and then make half-baked assumptions regarding Favre's retirement.
This article just causes me to shake my head. Gary, who are you that you need to be convinced? There are always many things to be considered when making the decision Favre made. I have my own feelings on it, but so what? The guy retired, let's move on. If something comes out later, it's something to write about THEN. I respect the man and if he says it's over, it's over...move on. As for your TT comments, grow up. The man has done a decent job and I support him. I think if I was in his position, I wouldn't get on my knees and beg any player. Be a man and deal with people like men. This is football isn't it? Life goes on...

OMG People! This is like the people who think Elvis is still alive! GET OVET IT!! HE RETIRED! ITS DONE! MOVE ON ALREADY!!
Posted by: brewpackman on March 10, 2008 4:37PM CST
I agree haileysmom... It's just that there are people like Gery Woelful who are doing Brett Favre an injustice from his retirement by refusing to let it go. I think he has a journalistic responsibility to knock this crap off, and move on......thats all
Posted by: concerned4 on March 10, 2008 4:54PM CST
Do you doubters really think Favre would say anything negative about TT or MM at Lambeau Field? That's why he made his feelings known through his brother and his agent.
Gery - just noticed you deleted my comment posted last week - thanks much for being consistent!
You must be on vacation - nothing new from you since this Favre rant of March 9. Hope that you are following your Milwaukee Yucks - they are sinking fast.
All have a nice Easter.

Hey gery, did you see the latest news? I'll post it for you in case you didn't.
Green Bay - Ted Thompson will be honored next week at the NFL owners' meetings as the George Young NFL executive of the year.
The award, given by The Sporting News, is decided in a vote of general managers and other team executives. A total of 48 votes were cast and Thompson received 19. The second place finisher was the New York Giants' Jerry Reese, who had nine. Ten other executives received one vote each.
How do you like those apples? It's kind of ironic that he was given this award by gm's and other executives, but he keeps getting slammed by a hack reporter like yourself. Time to own up to you being wrong and holding a grudge. Too bad the Bucks couldn't have made a package deal with the Journal Times and sent you on your way with your buddy Larry Harris. I agree with info, YOU STINK.
