You don’t need a Ph.D. in football to know the reason for the Green Bay Packers’ surreal success this season.
It’s Brett Favre.
Favre has been so brilliant that he’s not only making the players around him better – a true trait of a superstar – he’s even making Packers GM Ted Thompson and Packers coach Mike McCarthy look competent. And I, for one, didn’t think ANYBODY could do that.
Favre has been so spectacular the Packers have a 7-1 record, the best in the NFC and the second-best record in NFL behind the ridiculously good New England Patriots.
Favre has been so brilliant he’s masked a multitude of weaknesses on his team, most notably a joke of a running game that has neither a “take-it-to-the-house’’ threat nor an offensive lineman who could block his way out of a paper bag.
Yes, Favre has been that good. I further contend he’s never played better in his long and illustrious career, one in which he has been bestowed with an unprecedented three Most Valuable Player awards.
Under normal circumstances, Favre would be well on his way to a fourth MVP award. After all, he has passed for a league-best 300.8 yards a game and thrown for 2,406 yards, which is the most in the NFC.
But Favre’s fate will likely mirror Barack Obama’s; he’s going to finish second in the MVP voting to New England’s Tom Brady (2,686 yards passing and an insane 33 TD passes) -- just like Obama is going to be the runner-up to Hillary Clinton as the Democratic party presidential nominee.
Yet, even if the 38-year-old Favre falls short of joining New York Giants quarterback Charley Conerly (1959) as the oldest MVP in NFL history, he has already made this one of the most delightfully surreal seasons in Packers’ history.
Favre should get the nod over Brady for the simple fact that he does not have the weapons Brady has at his disposal. Plus, I think the Patriots penchant for running up the score against opponents and throwing for touchdowns when they are already several touchdowns in the lead accounts for some of the gaudy stats Brady has.
Can you tell I'm not a fan of NE?

Gery, to be honest I thought that TT had failed to put enough pieces together to build a playoff team. But while Favre has played great, he hasn't done it alone, in fact he was nowhere to be seen in two of the Packers victories.
TT has put together a good, not great, but good defense. He has put legitimate weapons at WR and TE positions on offense. He has significantly upgraded the special teams by improving, as he says, the bottom half of the roster.
The RB position and O-line need work. But to continue to take shots at him and McCarthy looks petty. You come across as someone who just can't bring himself to admit he was wrong. I know I was wrong, and I can admit it. It is time you do the same.
Why should Favre even be thought of for his 3 1/2 mvp award? Remeber he was co MVP with the great Barry Sanders. Favre cost his team a loss and possibly home field advantage with his poor play and subseguent injury (bruised ego) in Big D. He threw those 3 ints and all of sudden was hurt after falling behind early. That game will cost them becuase they will have to go back to dallas if they get to NFC championship. GO Bears! Sweep GB -28-7 3rd qtr hahahaha
