Are Packers Super Bowl contenders or pretenders?

GERY WOELFEL

In the last several days, I've informally polled several die-hard NFL fans on their Super Bowl picks.

Virtually all of them had different responses.

And that's understandable. There are a dozen, or maybe more, NFL teams that have the wherewithal to get to the "Big One.''

Even the so-called ''experts'' have a variety of opinions, especially when it comes to the NFC Super Bowl entrant. Take CBS television's pre-game panel of analysts, for example:

-- Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino -- the best pure passer I've ever seen - projects Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings playing New England in the Super Bowl.

-- Former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms tabs New England to play the Green Bay Packers.

-- Former Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe concurred with Simms' prognostication.

-- Former Pittsburgh Steelers Bill Cowher picks the Steelers to meet the New York Giants, his rationale being that the Steelers (Mike Tomlin) and Giants (Tom Coughlin) are two of only three current NFL coaches (the other being New England's Bill Belichick) who have won a Super Bowl.

Did you notice none of these gentlemen picked such certifiable Super Bowl contenders like San Diego or Indianapolis or Chicago or Philadelphia or Baltimore or Atlanta or Carolina or Dallas or  Arizona, which represented the NFC in last year's Super Bowl?

Or one of my picks, New Orleans?

Not only do I like Saints owner Tom Benson, who is doing his best to keep our state's economy afloat by buying luxury yachts from the good shipbuilders in Manitowoc, but I really like Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees has always been terrific signal-caller, but I look for him to become a special one this season and elevate the Saints to an elite strata.

Just like Tom Brady did with the Patriots in the past and what he'll do again now that he's healthy.

A Super Bowl of Saints and Patriots. What more could you want?

Fox analysts agree: Packers
By Bob Wolfley of the Journal Sentinel
Sept. 13, 2009 2:17 p.m.

All four of the analysts on “Fox NFL Sunday” picked the Packers to win the NFC North.

Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Jimmy Johnson picked Green Bay to win the division.

“To me, Aaron Rodgers looks unbelievable,” Long said. “The Packers look incredible on offense. Dom Capers brings that 3-4. (Aaron) Kampman looks like he made a great adjustment. Dom Capers has never had a secondary like this, particularly the corners, (Al) Harris and (Charles) Woodson.”

Strahan said: “I know everybody talks about Minnesota, but I think there is some distraction there with Brett Favre. Even though I think he is a game-changer. In Green Bay what they have there that is hungry, a team that has been close.”

Johnson said: “It comes down to quarterbacks. Brett Favre is going to be 40 years old in October. He (fades) down the stretch. He turns the football over. I think down the stretch Green Bay makes their presence known.

Bradshaw said: “I think the Favre thing is too much for the head coach and the entire organization, put everything on one guy and said here is our difference-maker. Remember when (Dallas) traded Herschel Walker to Minnesota. They thought all they needed was Herschel and we are going to the Super Bowl. It just normally doesn’t happen."

Bradshaw is at the end of his patience for Favre retirement talk.

"I’m tired of it," Bradshaw said. "My mom and dad are tired of it. We’re all tired of it. I wish it would go away. I’ll be glad when it goes away. I feel bad for the Green Bay Packer fans because of the way this guy is. I read back in May where Favre said, ‘I have given all I can give and I can’t give anymore.’ I’ll quote a great coach who once said when a player talks about retirement, he’s retired, and I’ll be glad when he’s retired and moved on because I’m really fed up with it."

Both Strahan and Long picked the Packers to play the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Johnson picked the Chargers and the Eagles. Bradshaw made no pick, but had the Packers playing the Eagles in the NFC Championship.

Meanwhile, all four of the analysts on “The NFL Today,” Dan Marino, Bill Cowher, Shannon Sharpe and Boomer Esiason picked Green Bay to beat Chicago tonight.

Esiason counts himself among those in the Aaron Rodgers Fan Club.

“Aaron Rodgers was one of the best stories last year, even though his team didn’t go to the playoffs” Esiason said. “They have a great offense. Dom Capers, their defensive coordinator brought in the 3-4. . . . I think Aaron Rodgers gets off to a great start. And don’t be surprised if Aaron Rodgers gets named the NFL’s MVP.”

Cowher spoke up for the Bears.

“You are going to get Matt Forte on the ground,” Cowher said. “You are going to get Jay Cutler throwing it through the air. I’m going to tell you, though, Chicago is going to be a tougher opponent than you think. Green Bay wins this thing close, but I think Chicago is going to come out and prove they are going to be a team to be reckoned with.”

When Marino was asked which player in the league – Favre, Cutler, Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb or Dallas’ Roy Williams – Marino picked Favre.

“He has a great defense to get him to the Super Bowl,” Marino said. “He has the best running back in the game in Adrian Peterson. So the pressure squarely on Brett Favre’s head to get them to the Super Bowl.”

Both Esiason and Sharpe picked the Packers and the Patriots to face off in the Super Bowl. Cowher picked the Steelers and Giants. Marino picked the Patriots and Vikings. Marino also predicted Rodgers and Saints quarterback Drew Brees each will throw for over 5,000 yards.
