I went in September 1986, and was especially impressed by how subtle it is. It starts from nothing at ground level, then gets taller as you walk on and go deeper. You are gradually removed from the noise of street level tourism down into a very solemn space of quiet sobbing, overwhelmed by the immense black wall of names.

I went in 2004. I was amazed by the things people left under the names of someone they knew. Letters, medals of honor, Flags, stuffed animals, pictures, jewelry, flowers and other items. And those items don't just get tossed away (well maybe the flowers). I guess the National Park Service catalogs all the items and keeps them. It was neat to see the outpouring of support for our veterans from so many Americans; especially since the Vietnam Vets were ignored and even spit on when they returned from their mission. I was relieved for them to see that people haven't forgot about them.
