Strangers on the road

I like to think that I’m capable of traveling on the road by myself…but then along comes car trouble.

My college-bound 19-year-old daughter and I were on our way to Iowa Saturday when we stopped at Roelli’s Cheese Store (just west of Monroe—about two hours from here) to buy cheese curds for our morning snack.

While backing out of the parking spot, my car began to make lots of noise. Hole-in-the-muffler or the sound of a dozen Harleys-type noise.

I looked under the car and seeing nothing unusual took a look under the hood. Nothing caught my attention there and so once more (lying on the ground), looked under the car.

That got one of the owners out of the store to see if I needed any help. YES!

Soon her husband came out, assessed the situation, advised me to drive the minivan into the large garage next door and proceeded to wire together my exhaust pipe and whatever else was under there so that there would be no chance of anything falling off over the next 300 miles.

Nothing did. We made lots of noise down the road, especially trying to climb over those rolling hills in southwestern Wisconsin and northeastern Iowa near the Mississippi River, but the exhaust system stayed together.

I thanked the Roellis profusely, offered some money (although the only cash I had on me was a roll of quarters for my daughter's first week of laundry), and he just suggested that I stopped by their store on Highway 11 (just east of Shullsburg) whenever I could.

I stopped there on my way home.

To show my appreciation, I mailed a note of thanks when I got back into town (along with a special local pastry treat).

Are you the stranger on the road who is willing to help someone in need? Or have you received help from someone you didn’t know?

Very nice.

You mailed a special pastry treat? Does that really work? Was it yummy? Can I have some?

many years ago, probably near summer 1990 or before, I was on my way to Milwaukee on the freeway, for an eye appointment, when at 7 mile road I got a flat.

I was in a dress and very frazzled. I stopped just after the northbound on-ramp. This was before we got the cell phones... and it had been a very long time since I changed a tire (yes, I know how and have).

We hadn't had the car for long and I didn't even know where they stashed the spare, besides not being dressed for crawling under the car to look. I stood at the rear of the car, frustrated, debating walking up the on ramp for help, when a Schneider semi truck pulled up in front of the car and stopped.

When you see those orange trucks out there, be nice to them, they're good guys!

He came to my aid, and sure enough, that spare was attached below the car in the center, crawling required... but he had it out in no time and changed it and off he road into the sunset (Ok, it was more like after sun rise, but you get the idea). I will never forget how nice that was. 3-4 different police, sherriff, etc went by and didn't even slow down, but one warm hearted sweet trucker came by and saved the day.

I wish I had caught his name to properly thank him. I did send a note to their office expressing my gratitude, never knowing if they found the one that it was.

I still smile every time I see one of their trucks :)

Many years ago I ran out of gas and a man stopped and took me to a gas station. A week or so later, I was driving down the same road and saw someone pulled over, so I stopped. It was the man who had helped me the week before and now he had run out of gas. So I took him to a nearby station. I find that when I see someone broken down, I almost always stop. Today most of them have cell phones but I have driven quite a few to a local gas station. I know it's risky but life is risky...and I think it's worth it.

A few years ago there was an elderly couple coming down US 64 going to Raleigh. They happened to get off the exit near a restaurant I worked at. They came in and ate and the little old man helped his very fraile wife to the car. When they got in it, it wouldn't start. He came back in the restaurant in such a panic state, saying he had to get his wife to Wake Med for a doctor's appointment in an hour. Of course no one had jumper cables but me, so I went to my car drove it over to his, popped the cables on and jumped started his car. He said he had AAA but didn't have the time to wait. I told him it was probably not going to start again when the left the doctor's office and to call AAA to have them bring him a new battery. TO my surprise, on their way back home the man stopped back in the restaurant and left a piece of paper on the windshield of my car with a note saying thank you and a $20.00. I wish he wouldn't have done that.
