Today's Journal Times had a great photo (2A) of the Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero Plaza in Paris. The tower opened to the public in 1889 and has had more than 200 million visitors (over 6.7 million in 2006). Made of iron, and with its antenna, it reaches a height of over 1,000 feet. The landmark hosts a museum, shops and restaurants--including one on the first floor and another on the second, 400 feet up. Have you visited the Eiffel Tower? Did you do a daytime visit, at night or both? Wednesday December 19, 2007

The film, "National Treasure Book of Secrets" which will be released Dec. 21, includes scenes at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. This National Park was never on my list of places to experience: It seemed to me that a lot of tourists visited this huge manmade carving in the side of a mountain--and I wondered what made it so appealing. When did you visit Mount Rushmore? Would you go back? Friday December 7, 2007

When we're on a long roadtrip and only need a hotel for a bed and a shower, I rely on the "relatively inexpensive" chain hotels. I pick up one of their books, figure out about where we'll be (or hope to be) by 11 p.m. that night and call (while on the road) and make a reservation. I miss my pop-up camper. Looking for a hotel on the ocean in Virigina Beach, Va., I wanted a small place (not a high-rise) so I could be on the ground floor overlooking the beach. After driving up and down Atlantic Avenue several times, we chose one that seemed OK. The refrigerator leaked, it was a bit musty, but the view was perfect--right on the beach and the boardwalk. The room left a lot to be desired, but the location was great. The best hotels I've stayed at recently have been ones that are affiliated with colleges. My youngest daughter went on an overnight college visit in DePere in October and I stayed at the Kress Inn right on campus--it was fabulous! Well-suited for the business traveler, there was a desk area to set your laptop and plug in for the Internet connection, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker and coffee fixings, ironing board and iron, hair dryer--and something I've never had before at a hotel--in the late afternoon (in the lobby) there was a table of cheese, crackers and wine--just help yourself! Needless to say, the lobby was the place to be before dinner. The place was impeccable. What's the best way to find a nice, clean hotel? Do you rely on the Internet or travel agents? Or do you just go to the same place, year after year? Wednesday December 5, 2007

The Racine area was subject to a winter blast of lake effect snow overnight and into Wednesday, blanketing the area in nearly four inches of snow overnight and more snowfall throughout the day. Residents found themselves digging out several inches of light, fluffy snow this morning while also battling blowing, drifting and cold temperatures. Snowfall made driving conditions hazardous. Visibility was reduced to less than one mile, but in many cases, it was less than a city block. Hazardous road conditions have already caused the death of one driver in a Tuesday morning accident in the Town of Burlington and another Tuesday night accident in Janesville. Brisk north winds caused the light, dry snow to rapidly blow and drift, quickly negating many shoveling, snowblowing and some road clearing efforts. The snow continued to fall Wednesday morning at a rate of about a half-an-inch per hour. The weather forced the cancellation of several Unified School District programs, including all afternoon 4-year-old kindergarten classes and early childhood classes in addition to afterschool activities at all Unified schools. The persistent snowfall forced Milwaukee's Mitchell Field to close their runways for four hours Wednesday morning, stranding air travelers at the airport. Runways were open again by late morning. More snow is forecast for later this week and the weekend. The National Weather Service says a mixture of snow and freezing rain can be expected to the south with snow to the north. |
