The forecast for the weekend is perfect for viewing Wisconsin's fall colors. Click here for a website that gives an updated Fall Color Report for the state. It shows that Racine County is not quite at the 75-100 percent peak yet, but you don't need to go far for peak autumn colors, winding country roads and beautiful blue skies. The Kettle Moraine area provides many viewing areas of rolling hills covered with trees that are in full color. Visit either Kettle Moraine North, Kettle Moraine South--or both if you have the time. Lots of hiking and the quiet of nature. Another great place to enjoy the view is Holy Hill, which is about an hour away--check out the visiting hours and plan to walk to the top of the tower for an even higher view of the surrounding landscape. For a less quiet adventure and if you're in a frightful mood, head to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee for Fright Fest--the weather will be great for roaming the haunted park. On Saturday we took a drive to see the fall colors in Racine County. The rolling hills had only a few trees with the bright reds, yellows and oranges -most were still pretty green- but the warm fall day was beautiful with the blue sky, unharvested corn fields and orange pumpkins decorating so many yards. A late afternoon snack (we shared a four-inch apple pie baked in a paper bag--yummm!!) was found at the popular Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago. If you've never been there, it's truly worth the drive. This time of year there's everything fall-pumpkins, gourds, apple pies, apple cider, outdoor seating on straw bales, make your own caramel apples and more. The apple pie was delicious. We found ourselves in Genesee Depot (about 8 miles north of Mukwonago) in time for dinner and stopped at the It's about an hour's drive from Racine--Highway 20 west to Highway 83, north to Genesee. This was a perfect little bistro restaurant. With acoustic music and songs with Daniel T. playing in the corner, they also had a nice wine list, a great variety of dinners and sandwiches from which to choose and my favorite, a nice selection of micro beers. As is typical of me, I tried something new off the list of micro beers. This time it was The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter from The Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio. I usually try a local beer, but its name intrigued me (and I've already had the Spotted Cow from the New Glarus Brewing Company). This was my first porter (dark, really dark beer) and it was perfect with my burger. I'm not a restaurant reviewer or a beer expert, but this was a nice little place--informal (yes, shorts and sneakers) but with great food and drink--in a quiet town on a Saturday night. Where do you go to see the fall colors?
