The Today Show's "America the Beautiful."
Posted by: Diane at 4:09PM CST on August 24, 2007

All summer, NBC's Today show has featured a segment sharing photos and video from beautiful places throughout the United States--"America the Beautiful."

They've chosen the top 10 locations in the country and this morning they had counted down to number four--I was lucky enough to still be at home when they aired number four of the 10 most "awe-inspiring locations" in the country.

If Hawaii is number four, specifically the island of Kauai, I can't imagine what the final three beautiful locations are.

Besides showing Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast (my favorite place ever!), the Kalalau trail, waterfalls and surfing enormous waves, they traveled by boat into coves and swam in sheltered waters.

The great thing was that they showed places I had never been...you can see them, too, by viewing the video at the Today's Show website,

I loved it when one of the guests referred to the Na Pali Coast as "Notre Dame."

The only drawback is...now even more people will go...and Kauai will become more crowded.

Have you seen any of the other top 10? So you know what their criteria is or how they picked these?

From Sturgis to Racine.
Posted by: Diane at 9:39AM CST on August 14, 2007

My trips to South Dakota have never included a visit to Sturgis during their annual motorcycle rally, but from the stories I've heard, I always thought that they were one of the Harley Owners Group chapters. It's not.

According to the Sturgis Rally website, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club started their first rally  Rally in Sturgis on Aug. 14, 1938. It's grown over the years. The 2007 rally ended on Sunday, Aug. 12, and the 2007 State Harley Owners Group Rally of Wisconsin will be in Racine, Aug. 17-19.

I've never been to a Harley rally, but I've been to other motorcycle rallies. They've all been self-contained and held at a fairgrounds or private campground and motorcyclists camped with their bikes parked right next to their tent.

This rally will be held at the Festival Site, 5 Fifth St.--no camping there--and the only thing open to the public there is a Vendor Venue, held in the south parking lot of the Festival Site.

The public will be able to watch the parade of motorcycles, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Case High School, 7345 Washington Ave., and heads east on Highway 20 to the site.

However, I'm sure this parade won't be like the one through downtown Galena, Ill., where the motorcyclists tossed necklaces and candy to the parade watchers.

Just be aware of a few thousand extra motorcycles on the road this weekend...welcome them to our city and don't run them over.

Will you be at the rally?
