Staying connected to Iowa during the floods
Posted by: Diane at 10:08AM CST on June 13, 2008

Earlier in the week Racine was on the national news with the flooding of the Root River and today it's Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A city of about 124,000 residents in eastern Iowa, my daughter is interning this summer on her college campus, about 20 minutes east of Cedar Rapids.

She made a half dozen calls to us yesterday, keeping us posted on the storm--which was pounding the Milwaukee area at the same time it was outside her dorm room, 260 miles away.

Fortunately, her campus is on a hill, and the little town of 3,300 has no flooding. They opened a dorm building to house evacuees from a college in Cedar Rapids that had to close some dorms due to the floods.

A half hour to the south of my daughter's campus lies the University of Iowa (the Hawkeyes, the UW-Madison Badgers' rival) in Iowa City, is located on the Iowa River. Their website's home page is now filled with "Flood Information" and notices of cancelled sports camps, rescheduled orientation days and freshman visits and building closures.

Cities throughout the Midwest are having horrific floods (just look at some of the blogs on our website).

If you're doing a "staycation" this year and not heading far from home, at least pull out your atlas and learn a little geography this summer.

I know I am.

Don't cancel that Dells trip
Posted by: Diane at 8:32AM CST on June 10, 2008

The Tommy Bartlett Show on Lake Delton has been around for more than 50 years.

With the news of Lake Delton breaking its banks Monday and 245 acres of the lake pouring into the Wisconsin River, there won't be any water-skiing or boating on the lake in the near future.

But the Wisconsin Ducks live on. Their tours will undoubtedly continue on the Wisconsin River next to the tall sandstone cliffs and through the quiet woods...with the tour guides telling their goofy (can't help but laugh) jokes.

Most of the hotels and waterparks in the area are self-contained and not located on Lake Delton.

While some of the homes on the lake are now gone, the Dells doesn't need us to turn our backs on the area. It's a popular Midwest destination--I have lost track of the number of times we've vacationed there.

During our trips to the Dells, we filled our vacation time with more than just the waterski show, riding the boats and the ducks and renting a boat on the lake.

Will this news of flooding change your next trip plans to the famed Wisconsin Dells? Why or why not?
