Earthquake in Seattle early Friday morning
Posted by: Diane at 10:10AM CST on January 30, 2009

As if things in Seattle weren't shaky enough:

SEATTLE (AP) — A 4.5 magnitude earthquake rattled the Seattle and Puget Sound area early Friday, waking up a lot of people. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake at 5:25 a.m. was centered 14 miles northwest of Seattle near Kingston, in Kitsap County. It was felt as far away as Victoria, British Columbia, 70 miles to the north.

Seattle radio and TV stations heard from callers who said they felt the shaking for 10 or 15 seconds.

A 6.8 magnitude quake shook Washington state on Feb. 28, 2001, damaging the state Capitol in Olympia and historic buildings in Seattle. It was the largest earthquake to shake the area in more than a half-century.

Imagining a million people at the Mall in DC
Posted by: Diane at 9:54PM CST on January 19, 2009

We stood on the steps of the west front of the U.S. Capitol; we looked out toward the Washington Monument and beyond to the Lincoln Memorial. I cannot imagine a million or more people crammed together.

We were alone on the steps that day. No one was around to take our family photo. I didn't have my tripod with me because it was too much to lug around in this city where metal detectors greet you inside every building.

I don't know how many people have ventured out onto the steps of the U.S. Capitol, or how many have even explored the building itself, with its Statuary Hall, Rotunda, and Frieze of American History.

The new Capitol Visitor Center just opened on Dec. 2 (not open for tours during these busy couple of days, though).

Prior to President Reagan, the outdoor ceremony took place on the east front of the building, which faces the U.S. Supreme Court and the Library of Congress.

The inaugural platform has been built on the west side during recent inaugurations because it accomodates more spectators.

It's hard to fathom the size and beauty of the open spaces at the foot of the Capitol and the Washington Monument.

If you could be in DC on Tuesday, where would you want to be watching the events unfold?

I'd want to be on the west steps of the Capitol, behind the scenes.

Space Mountain closes for renovation
Posted by: Diane at 8:07PM CST on January 8, 2009

It's been in the news the past few days: The Space Mountain roller coaster ride in Walt Disney World will be closed April 19 for renovation.

It really doesn't matter...unless you're planning a trip for that time! Isn't Space Mountain the first ride you went on upon your arrival in the Magic Kingdom? It was for me. Every time.

The ride that was closed each time I was at the World was   20000 Leagues Under the Sea: The submarine ride was pretty popular but closed in 1994.

What ride was closed when you were in WDW? Which ride do you wish was closed?
