"Some U.S. embassies worldwide are being advised to purchase massive amounts of local currencies; enough to last them a year. Some embassies are being sent enormous amounts of U.S. cash to purchase currencies from those governments, quietly. But not pound sterling. Inside the State Dept., there is a sense of sadness and foreboding that 'something' is about to happen ... within 180 days, but could be 120-150 days." The above quote is from the Harry Schultz letter, an economic guide to allocating your savings and income. Just last year, they predicted the market crash months before it actually happened. Further, they go on to state, "Another FDR-style 'bank holiday' of indefinite length, perhaps soon, to let the insiders sort out the bank mess, which (despite their rosy propaganda campaign) is getting more out of their control every day. Insiders want to impose new bank rules. Widespread nationalization could result, already underway. It could also lead to a formal U.S. dollar devaluation, as FDR did by revaluing gold (and then confiscating it)." The time frame right now for a banking holiday is the end of August or beginning of September. There are also several variables to consider. It is becoming more and more likely that California could declare bankruptcy as early as the end of July. If this happens, several states will follow suit. What would normally happen at this point is the federal government stepping in to help secure loans for the state, HOWEVER, the federal government is only surviving right now because of the Chinese willingness to buy billions of dollars of our debt. They are becoming weary about buying more though, simply because of the escalating spending policies of the federal government. This month, they've sold off about four billion dollars worth of our securities. It's safe to say you can't rely on a Federal government that is in turn relying on the Chinese to stay afloat while still spending recklessly. On top of that, hyperinflation is going to hit. Right now, the dollar is rising in value pretty steadily with the value of gold. Since gold is priced in dollars, the value of it usually falls when the dollar rises and vise versa. Right now, it signals that central banks around the world are losing credibility. As mentioned above, however, one plan being talked about is devaluation of the dollar. At that point the price of gold skyrockets while the dollar plummets. Hello, hyperinflation. "When everything else gets more expensive, and as flat currencies are shown to be the "worthless paper" they really are, gold and silver will become the only real safe-havens from the resulting inflation and financial deterioration." But for a moment here I'd like to point out my college education was around Philosophy, not Economics. I'm not some sort of money genius and I can't say for certain that anything listed above will happen definitely. Evidence supports it, but that's as far as it goes. That being said, if the dollar is devalued then the moment that hyperinflation hits people will be trying to get rid of everything they have for gold. If you buy gold now and everything happens like what's being predicted, that gold will increase two or three times in value in those first days alone. And right now it's sitting pretty right around $970 an ounce. If nothing above happens, the Gold isn't going to lose value over time, so it's still an important asset. The Schultz letter recommends 45% of a portfolio be invested in gold, so it's not like investing in a bad stock. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/schultz-paints-bleak-picture-of-future http://articles.latimes.com/2009/may/08/local/me-california-budget-crisis8 http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.6cc88b76aff9be3f90f62526a3107ec9.31&show_article=1 http://www.kathylien.com/site/forex-blog/gold-and-the-dollar-rising-together http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article11462.html

Luxury ocean liners in Russia are offering pirate hunting cruises aboard armed private yachts off the Somali coast. Wealthy punters pay £3,500 per day to patrol the most dangerous waters in the world hoping to be attacked by raiders. When attacked, they retaliate with grenade launchers, machine guns and rocket launchers, reports Austrian business paper Wirtschaftsblatt. Passengers, who can pay an extra £5 a day for an AK-47 machine gun and £7 for 100 rounds of ammo, are also protected by a squad of ex special forces troops. The yachts travel from Djibouti in Somalia to Mombasa in Kenya. The ships deliberately cruise close to the coast at a speed of just five nautical miles in an attempt to attract the interest of pirates. "They are worse than the pirates," said Russian yachtsman Vladimir Mironov. "At least the pirates have the decency to take hostages, these people are just paying to commit murder," he continued. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_3374702.html Friday June 26, 2009

It's been a rough week for Ben Bernanke. First, he was faced with overwhelming evidence that he ordered former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to fire the Bank Of America's top managers if they backed out of a merger with Merrill Lynch. Then there was the business about ordering all of Merrill Lynch's losses to be concealed from investors and regulators. Naturally, the response is "I don't remember exactly..." The reward for this behavior? The Obama administration steps in and offers to expand the Fed's power so they can, and I quote, "head off a future crisis." This is before the role of the Fed in the current crisis is fully explored. Which might not be far off, if Ron Paul has his way. A current bill he introduced that now has support of over 50% of the house of representatives would give the Government Accountability Office the power to audit the Federal Reserve, which is currently not a power they are granted at the moment. What was Bernanke's response? "My concern about the legislation is that the GAO is auditing not only the operational aspects of our programs and details of the programs, but is making judgments about our policy decisions that would effectively be a takeover of monetary policy by the Congress, a repudiation of the independence of the Federal Reserve, which would be highly destructive to the stability of the financial system, the dollar and our national economic situation." he said. Let me paraphrase that: "You start auditing us, and we'll crash your economy." The Federal Reserve has gone unchecked for far too long and with the behavior of Mr. Bernanke this week, it's obvious that the inability of the government to shed light on their behavior has caused them to become reckless in their lust for both power and greed. How did I come to that conclusion? The third story of the week, which completes a trifecta of corruption in the Fed. Fed Inspector General Claims She Does Not Know Where Trillions Went Because of the secretive nature of the Fed, nobody knows exactly who or what is receiving federal bailout money and how much exactly they might be getting. At the forefront of the TARP arguments was President Obama, claiming oversight and transparency was necessary to knowing where the billions of dollars of government bailout money was going. Secretary Paulson and Bernanke echoed the sentiment at the time. The results? Bloomberg news had to sue the Fed to advance a Freedom of Information inquiry as to where exactly the money was going. As of right now, it's still languishing in court. Until that passes, if that passes, up to 9.7 trillion could be completely unaccounted for. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=washingtonstory&sid=aGq2B3XeGKok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXlxBeAvsB8 http://www.nasdaq.com/aspx/stock-market-news-story.aspx?storyid=200906251720dowjonesdjonline000958&title=2nd-update-lawmakers-attack-fed-for-being-too-secretive http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/banking/2009-04-25-bernanke-boa-merrill_N.htm?csp=34 Thursday June 25, 2009

Excellent article pointing out exactly where we stand as a country (we're broke) and how we can fix it (we can't). Sounds a little bleak? It's becoming more of a reality day by day so you might as well prepare for it.

While trying to understand exactly why Democrats love the minority vote (another column on that later), I found this gem of an article from Star Parker, an African-American columnist who went from "drugs, crime, abortion and welfare abuse to being a leading advocate for the family." http://townhall.com/Columnists/StarParker/2009/03/30/gospel_of_dependence_from_national_urban_league?page=1 The National Urban League has just issued its annual State of Black America report. It provides a troubling statistical snapshot of where blacks stand today in our country.
Like Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, I'm
concerned. But after concern, we part company. We have very different
ideas of what it is we should be concerned about. Morial, I am sure, sees his organization as part of the solution. From what I see, it is a well-funded symptom of the problem. Shouldn't it embarrass black Americans that one the nation's largest and most prestigious civil rights organizations offers a long list of proposals to improve black life in our country, and every single proposal is a government program? Government funded jobs as the answer to unemployment, more government money in public schools, government health care, government business loans, government money for retirement accounts, government programs for counseling homebuyers, government worker training programs, government money for building construction, and on and on. There's not a single proposal that I could find in a several hundred-page report about improving black life that does not start with government. The civil rights movement once was about freedom and liberation. Now it's about government dependency. We should be ashamed. The report is crafted to disabuse any notion that since we now have a black president, our discrimination woes are "relics of the past." The proof: blacks are "twice as likely as whites to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be incarcerated." But with all the statistics reported, methodically ignored is that blacks are little more than 12 percent of the population, yet we account for 50 percent of new AIDS cases, almost 40 percent of abortions, and 70 percent of black babies are born to unwed mothers and grow up in single parent homes. Please, hold the hate mail telling me that I only want to show the ugly side of black America. No, I want to show the side of black America for which we ourselves are responsible and which really point to where our problems lie.The National Urban League report talks about black poverty. But it does not bother to point out that hand in hand with poverty are single-parent homes. That black households with two married parents are not living in poverty and their household incomes are on par with those of white households. Breakdown in family and values is at the root of poor education, unemployment, and crime as well. Blacks have the highest church attendance in the country. If we paid attention to the gospel heard on Sunday, we wouldn't think that extorting welfare from taxpayers was the answer to our problems the other six days of the week. Regarding discrimination, you have to wonder what it will take to get off this convenient excuse. Some 40 million white Americans voted for Barack Obama for president. That is two million more white Americans than voted for John Kerry in 2004. As the civil rights movement transformed into a government dependency movement, the original focus on law and the U.S. constitution as the vehicles to protect all citizens has been lost. My friend Pastor Walter Hoye sits in jail in Oakland, California for violating a clearly unconstitutional city ordinance prohibiting him from peacefully standing in front of an abortion clinic offering life literature to the mostly black clientele. A black pastor's civil rights have been violated as he tried to save black babies. It happened in the district of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Yet, she could care less and has done nothing. The National Urban League could care less. The NAACP could care less. What's wrong in black America? You won't find the answer in the National Urban League's report. Tuesday June 16, 2009

In the latest response to the increase of crime due to their total gun ban, Britain revealed this week a new measure to combat increasing knife crime: the anti-stab knife. http://dvice.com/archives/2009/06/anti-stab-knife.php To understand how a once great country reached this point, it's important to start at the beginning of the problem. That takes us back to 1997 when Britain imposed a complete ban on the ownership of firearms. In the following year, gun crime TRIPLED. Mass importation of illegal firearms from Eastern Europe drove down prices to where even low-level criminals could afford them. The general public? Completely disarmed. The lesson that should have been learned is a message former marine Jeff Cooper had preached until his death, "The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles." Unfortunately, instead of using logic and understanding the statistics put before them, the British government took the opposite approach and continued to blame the object instead of the people with the will to commit crime. While gun crime continued to grow, knife crime among teenagers also skyrocketed. The British answer to this was to tax their citizens to the tune of $200 MILLION, and not a dime of that went to incarcerating criminal youth. Instead, they created a program where youth went to hospital wards to meet victims of knife attacks, families of victims of knife attacks, and people who are in prison for knife crime. Statistics have shown convictions for carrying a knife in school rose 60% in a decade with the majority of offenders never going to jail. 20,000 knife crimes occur per year and 60 people per day are victims. Britain's response wasn't to restore the rights of citizens to defend themselves. It was to create an anti-stab knife. Even worse, if this measure fails, there have already been talks of a complete knife ban. Personally, I think it's only a matter of time. The only question is what will the criminals use to kill next, and how long before that is banned? Britain: They still don't get it. Sunday June 14, 2009

When all else fails, sue! Roughly four months ago, two West Bend residents came forward with a complaint about "sexually explicit" literature available for young adults. In February, they wanted a link removed to a list of recommended reading about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered lifestyles. In March, they demanded moving several titles from the young adult section to the adult section. The two residents then started a petition with 443 signatures asking the board to balance the titles with heterosexual novels and novels from ex-gay authors. Enter West Bend Alderman Terry Vrana, who blamed trustees of "acting on their own ideology" and, after being explained the library's consideration process, demanded, "I don't care about your policies, I want those books off the shelves." This is the same Terry Vrana who previously walked out of a council meeting because his vote against an interim mayor for the city of West Bend would have failed. As a result, no vote could be taken. This is the same Terry Vrana, who, April 21, voted against the appointment of four of the library trustees (the ones who denied his removal of the books) whose terms were ending. Mayor Kristine Deiss had recommended to reappoint the four, coincidentally she was the nominee to be acting interim mayor when Vrana walked out of the meeting. Was there ever a question that politicians can be just as petty and vindictive as anyone else? Usually they hide their actions better though. After four months of the back and forth between community and library, trustees voted 9-0 to not remove, relocate, relabel, or make unavailable any of the questioned titles. To the nine trustees, I salute you. You protected the First Amendment against overzealous citizens and petty Aldermen. After all, Free Speech doesn't protect the language and transmission of ideas you agree with. It protects the ones you hate. However, the saga doesn't end there. Enter Robert C. Braun, Lawyer of the Christian Civil Liberties Union. He and three other plaintiffs filed (and I'm not making this up) for the right to publicly burn or otherwise destroy the library's copy of Baby Be-Bop, and $120,000 in compensatory damages along with the firing of Mayor Kristine Deiss for allowing the book to be viewed by the public. What I found most interesting from this story is as follows: “...the plaintiffs, all of whom are elderly, claim their mental and emotional well-being was damaged by this book at the library...Baby Be-Bop contains the “n” word and derogatory sexual and political epithets that can incite violence and put one’s life in possible jeopardy, adults and children alike.” My question is; if they're offended, why did they pick up the book and read it? You don't have the right to walk through life without being offended by anything. Everything is offensive or insulting to someone. This is a frivolous lawsuit that won't go anywhere in court, and frankly, these people in West Bend should have their local water supply checked for dangerous levels of...well, whatever makes a person go insane. And while the petition for removal ended up with over 700 signatures, a new petition was filed for citizens against speech restriction that finished with over 1,000 votes. Proving some common sense still exists in America today. Friday June 12, 2009

If you're not familiar with the story, two Milwaukee police officers stopped an 18 year old subject in the street for questioning. As one officer started to pat down the suspect, he turned and opened fire with a .40 caliber handgun, shooting both officers. One has been released from the hospital, the other still in serious condition. The suspect was caught a short time later after he broke into a home.
Mayor Barrett is using this as a platform to create a special session of the legislation to introduce more gun laws "stricter than the state law" in the city of Milwaukee. He still doesn't get it. Case in point: Just yesterday, another shooting happened. A man who had been released from prison just two days ago used a firearm to kill another man. Wednesday June 10, 2009

The words 'Nous ne sommes pas seuls' or 'We are not alone' will be
somberly pronounced this week by a senior Government official of the
nation that brought the world 'Liberté, égalité, fraternité'. France is
set to concede that it is aware of an alien presence on earth by no
later than Friday. Paris has chosen follow the lead of maverick UFO nation Brazil and resist US pressure to continue delaying disclosure until America feels it is ready for the event. It is believed that a telephone hot-line has been set up in Paris to deal with queries from panicky citizens. A special division of France's police department is also to be established: to handle UFO reports. The French have gone to so much effort to protect their culture from encroaching 'Anglo-Saxon' influences and now they are preparing to protect their culture from what might be even more powerful extraterrestrial forces. It is believed Holland and Germany are set to soon follow France's lead. //M. Cohen
http://macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/7034/56/ It's strange to think of this as a legitimate news story, not because of the content but because of the implications. The basis of all religion, the seven days of creation would be shadowed by the existence of a race that predates our beliefs by, well, nobody can even assume to know how many years. What would that do to radical islamists? What would that do to Christianity? Would it give credit to Athiesm? And what would the first reaction of the people be? Would it be sheer panic from years of Hollywood movies suddenly being given credit? Would there be mass panic in the streets? Or would they just shrug their shoulders and go on with their lives? That is, if the story is even true. But I'm finding it fascinating to consider the possibilities. Saturday June 6, 2009

Detroit, the former "Murder capital of the United States", is not a city often times compared to Milwaukee. Yet, when considering violent crimes committed per capita in cities with more than 500,000 residents, the only difference between the violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) in Detroit and the violent crime in Milwaukee is .3%. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/realclearpolitics/20090605/cm_rcp/america039s_safest_cities;_ylt=AkNgLl7z63XOS_13uO1C_zUDW7oF) That's right, less than a full percentage point is all that separates Milwaukee from the former murder capital of the United States. But how did we get to this point? Before Detroit took the murder trophy, Washington D.C held it for many years. In all fairness, D.C was really hit hard by the crack-cocaine driven crime sprees in the nineties, and while the murders have tapered off in recent years the image most people still conjure is then-Mayor Marion Berry claiming that, "Despite all the murders, D.C is a pretty nice place to live." Detroit has a history of the infrastructure collapsing and rebuilding with the automobile economy. But why is Milwaukee collapsing in on itself? Our teens like to have sex. Lots of it. In 2007, 1,954 teens under 18 gave birth in Milwaukee. (http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/births/pdf/07teenbirths.pdf) This puts us among the highest teen birth rates in the country. On the healthcare front, teen parents are associated with lower health rates for the child and higher healthcare costs for the community. Because the teen often times doesn't have the parenting skills of a more matured adult, family dysfunction and child abuse are also linked to teenage parents. Last but not least... Our teens aren't graduating high school. Milwaukee has a 56% graduation rate. (http://www.wpri.org/Reports/Volume16/Vol16no2.pdf) Combine it with the last statistic: 1,954 teens under 18 gave birth. 1,094 can be expected to graduate. That means 860 of those single mothers will be leaving high school and entering the workforce with no education whatsoever. On average, workers without a high school diploma earn a little over $18,500 per year. The poverty line for a family of three is $15,700. If you need a little reinforcement of the link between the poverty level and the crime level, consider the fact that Detroit is the poorest city in America. When a person has no money and no education to earn money, what are the other options? Music, Sports or Drugs. All too often the only way out of poverty is viewed as either music, sports or drugs. How many people have the natural physical ability to make it professionally in sports? How many people have the natural ability to become a successful music artist? That leaves one easy option that anyone with the ability to stand on a curb can make easy money doing: selling drugs. When you have a large amount of people fighting for a relatively small amount of customers, it isn't like Corporate America where the options to produce business are either come up with a better product or maybe an advertising campaign, rather it's a matter of killing a rival and taking his customers. But it's not as easy as saying we just have to step up law enforcement and become tougher on criminals (which is partly true, Milwaukee judges are notoriously easy on violent offenders), we need to offer a viable alternative to the criminal lifestyle so that when the next generation of children grow up and start watching people be arrested for drug dealing and violent crime, there exists a viable alternative to make a legal, decent living wage so the courts will actually start working as a deterrent to the criminal lifestyle. TAXES ARE TOO HIGH "For most of the past 50 years, Wisconsin has been one of the most heavily-taxed states in the nation. We have high property taxes, high income taxes, and high business taxes — presently the 8th highest taxes as a percentage of personal income." (http://www.wmc.org/display.cfm?ID=1820) Do you know how Washington D.C turned the city around? Gentrification. The affluent moved into lower class areas and drove up property value. While I don't agree with it as a public policy (one can argue all it did was displace the criminal element from D.C to Baltimore), it does relate to Milwaukee. The exact opposite of gentrification is disinvestment. And what has the government of Wisconsin done other than withdraw the capital from businesses willing to invest in Wisconsin? Where has this removal of capital from both business and resident gone? Into a failing school system. And that, my friends, is the diagnosis of why Milwaukee is failing. The failure of our school systems combined with a high teen birth rate is leading to an uneducated worker pool which is unappealing to high-income jobs, which, combined with the high income and business taxes, have no incentive to move to Wisconsin. As a result, the population is turning to drugs as an easy way to make a lot of money; and where there are drugs, there exists violent crime. Until government decides to change public policy, this self-defeating pattern of feeding public money to an ineffective government machine will continue. Thursday June 4, 2009

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Kentucky pastor is inviting his flock to bring guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment. New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church June 27, a Saturday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety. "We're just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation," said pastor Ken Pagano. "And we're not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms — without that this country wouldn't be here." The guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors at the door, Pagano said. He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership. The New Bethel Church event was planned months before Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in a Wichita church. Kentucky allows residents to openly carry guns in public with some restrictions. Gun owners carrying concealed weapons must have state-issued permits and can't take them to schools, jails or bars, among other exceptions. Pagano's Protestant church, which attracts up to 150 people to Sunday services, is a member of the Assemblies of God. The former Marine and handgun instructor said he expected some backlash, but has heard only a "little bit" of criticism of the gun event. John Phillips, an Arkansas pastor who was shot twice while leading a service at his former church in 1986, said a house of worship is no place for firearms. "A church is designated as a safe haven, it's a place of worship," said Phillips, who was shot by a church member's relative for an unknown reason and still has a bullet lodged in his spine. "It is unconscionable to me to think that a church would be a place that you would even want to bring a weapon." Phillips spoke out against a bill before the Arkansas General Assembly that would have permitted the carrying of guns in that state's churches. The bill failed in February. Pagano, 50, said some members of his church were concerned that President Obama's administration could restrict gun ownership, and they supported the plan for the event when Pagano asked their opinion. Marian McClure Taylor, executive director of the Kentucky Council of Churches, an umbrella organization for 11 Christian denominations in Kentucky, said Christian churches are promoters of peace, but "most allow for arms to be taken up under certain conditions." Taylor said Pagano assured her the event would focus on promoting responsible gun ownership and any proceeds would go to charity. "Those two commitments are consistent with the high value the Assemblies of God churches place on human life," she said in an e-mail message. Pagano is encouraging church members to bring a canned good and a friend to the event. He said guns must be unloaded for insurance purposes and safety reasons. He said the point was not to mix worship with guns, though he may reference some passages from the Bible. "Firearms can be evil and they can be useful," he said. "We're just trying to promote responsible gun ownership and gun safety." Wednesday June 3, 2009

South Milwaukee Common Council (apparently the "Common" doesn't stand for common sense) unanimously supported an ordinance that would impose a minimum fine of $2,500 for openly carrying a gun into any school or public building; at any public park; on school grounds or playgrounds; on any premises that is licensed to sell alcohol; and at any business where a sign is posted prohibiting the carrying of firearms. The reason why I say "Common" doesn't stand for common sense, is because it is already illegal to have a handgun in these places. It has been illegal for years and yet people keep getting arrested for doing it. For those of us with common sense, it's a pretty simple concept; the criminals don't follow the law no matter how restrictive you become. The only people these ordinances target are law-abiding citizens, who, up until the passage of these fines, have done nothing wrong in their life other than want to defend themselves from criminals. The minimum fine is $2,500. The maximum fine is $10,000. TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. That's how much it costs to live free according to the second amendment. Now I'm not advocating breaking the law, so take the next part with a grain of salt. You want to stay economically sound, yet still value your safety? Carry illegally. While the State has actively worked against the law-abiding citizen, the average criminal still enjoys the relative safety of carrying a handgun at a fraction of the price. Fines for carrying concealed are a Class A misdemeanor, possible 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Except you won't get 90 days in jail because the State Budget has decided to release all non-violent criminals to free up money from the jail system. So all you're looking at is a $500 fine, a misdemeanor and loss of your gun. You'd have to spend $2,000 on a handgun to face the total of the fine for carrying legally in Milwaukee! That is why I firmly believe in these economic times, it pays to be a criminal in Wisconsin. Short jail time (if any), low fines for breaking the law, and you have an entire unarmed populace to pick and choose to rob at will. For the local criminal union, sleep tight tonight. The government is standing behind you in your efforts. Tuesday June 2, 2009

What would happen if a group of white, high school aged teenagers used a social networking site and text messages to assemble on a street of a city and wreak havoc, specifically targeting African American businesses and people? What if they destroyed buildings and pulled people out of their cars and beaten them so severely they had to be hospitalized? Would Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson be leading peaceful walks down the streets and saying racism is still alive and well in America? Well, it's happening in America, except it's the other way around. African American youth are using the social networking site "ourspace", which prides itself on being the number one social networking site for African American youth, to assemble on specific streets in South Philadelphia and destroy the neighborhood. Two weeks in a row now the carnage has happened and it's left buildings destroyed and people hospitalized. Where is the media coverage or the cries of a hate crime? Do hate crimes only exist when it's white on black crime? Also, is this another example of people being unable to defend themselves because of stringent gun control laws? Philadelphia recently presented five new laws to their already filled books (which, the criminals are already not following). 1) One handgun per month with an addendum for straw purchases, which was ALREADY ILLEGAL under federal law. 2) 90 day jail sentences and thousand dollar fines for anyone who doesn't report a lost or stolen handgun within 24 hours. Since most criminals acquire their guns illegally from stealing, not buying, from law-abiding citizen, this doesn't target anyone but the lawful citizen. 3) The infamous "Assault Weapon" ban. "Assault Weapons" will get their own special paragraph, because this is an especially sore subject for me. By definition an Assault Weapon is a rifle that can fire either in three round bursts or fully automatic with one trigger pull. This is already illegal under US law, so the only term that should be used is semiautomatic rifle ban, except nobody would ever pass that law because it's not nearly as threatening. Especially when you consider the law doesn't target the fact that the rifle is semiautomatic, but cosmetic accessories. Ask yourself; does a pistol grip really increase the lethality of a weapon? What about a folding stock? Another infamous bannable item is a barrel shroud, a protective covering that stops a person from burning their hand on a hot barrel. But the most offensive of the list is the banning of all magazines over ten rounds. Critics often argue that there is no use for anything over ten rounds. Really? Read the article I've posted below and make a decision. If you have a group of teens that are violent and on your doorstep trying to break into your house, isn't there now a viable use for that fifteen/twenty/thirty round magazine? (From the news article)http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/take_action&id=6842822 SOUTH PHILADELPHIA June 1, 2009 (WPVI) -- For the second weekend in a row, teenagers attacked both people and property, causing a lot of damage to both. Police say word spread online for the teenagers to mass in the street. This is the mini mart that got trashed. The mob left here and headed back toward South Street. Two blocks away, they came across a young couple in a Jeep who spoke exclusively with Action News about their terrifying ordeal. They asked us to conceal their faces and last names. "Laying in that bed in the hospital thankful that I'm breathing, I'm alive," said Nick. Nick and his girlfriend Susanne were in a Jeep, stopped at the light on Broad Street. Earlier in the night the teens had marauded through South Street, carjacking a cab and crashing it, jumping on the hoods and roofs of other cars. They went up Broad Street and swept through a mini-mart, completely trashing it. Then they found Susanne and Nick. "I got really scared for the fact that there were so many of them and they were literally everywhere, everywhere I looked there were people and they were just beating and cursing and yelling and they were in front of my car, on the side of my car pounding on the windows," Susanne described. Susanne says the first mistake she made was getting out of the car. "They threw a bag of chips at me and a water bottle and when I turned to get back in my car they grabbed me by my hair and pulled me down and just started kicking and punching me." Nick tried to help, but he was pummeled to the ground. "As soon as I exited the car to grab her I was hit from all directions and on the ground covering my face up from being kicked." Both spent the night in the hospital getting treated for cuts and bruises. This is at least the second rampage incident over the past two weeks. Another couple was attacked last weekend at Broad and Walnut. When Susanne was attacked, one of the first people she called was her mother in North Carolina. Trish Grant hopped the next plane out. "To think of someone pulling your daughter by her hair and dragging her on concrete pavement is uh it makes you angry you know it makes you very angry as a parent." |
