Countdown to the Olbereilly Factor
Posted by: psloth on April 24, 2009 at 7:26AM CST

I’ve just learned that there’s nothing quite as unbecoming as a cable news tinkling (yes, you can't use the P-word) match between two egomaniacs.

It’s one reason I don’t devote myself to the evening cable chat shows like “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” or “The O’Reilly Factor.”

Another reason … it’s just not how I choose to spend my prime time. Even if I did, my other half can’t stand all the pompous blustering that emanates from both Olbermann and O’Reilly and others of their ilk. I think one of these talkers calls it bloviating. If I stop on these shows for just a second too long, my wife usually screams.

So it’s rare indeed to watch both Olbermann’s and O’Reilly’s shows back to back … on the same night, in their entirety. It’s only possible when I can’t sleep. And so, there I was Friday morning watching repeats of the previous evening’s shows, one right after the other, while the rest of my family slept.

Maybe I’m just catching up, but Olbermann and O’Reilly both spent what seemed like an inordinate amount of time attacking each other’s networks, when they weren't lobbing bombs at their ideological enemies at the other end of the spectrum.

Whenever I’ve caught snippets of Olbermann’s show before, he’s always going after O’Reilly. If I happen to catch some of O’Reilly’s show, he’s either bragging about his ratings, or hawking his books, T-shirts or patriotic doormats. Olbermann attacks Fox (O’Reilly’s channel). O’Reilly attacks MSNBC (Olbermann’s channel).

Apparently, it’s now so bad that O’Reilly is dispatching his minions to infiltrate shareholder meetings of rival networks, particularly General Electric, which owns MSNBC, which employs Olbermann. At least that’s what both he and Olbermann talked about on their shows Thursday.

Fans of both Olbermann and O'Reilly have joined the fight, too.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand that neither of them try to pass themselves off as straight news people, although it might not always be so clear. Their evening broadcasts and bromides are soaked in opinion.

The sad reality is, so many people watch both shows … millions of people.

I’m guessing when these people are swirling their martinis or swilling their beers, Olbermann’s and O’Reilly’s fans alike, they’re not swapping nuggets of information they’ve gleaned from the most recent piece of journalism they read. They’re probably sharing war stories gleaned from their favorite opinion makers.

Sometimes, these war stories end up getting passed on as news rather than opinion.

Olbermann and O’Reilly are two sides of the same coin. Olbermann provides aid and comfort to the left. O’Reilly does the same for the right.

I get the feeling that those who watch either show, or both shows, are the ring of kids circling the two schoolyard bullies as they duke it out … in service to their country and their network bosses’s bottom lines.

In the wee hours of the morning Friday, I guess I stopped to take a look and see who had drawn the most blood. Or maybe it was all just a dream.

It's amazing how many more viewers FOX has over MSNBC. I catch O'Reilly once in a while but I usually have other things I prefer to watch unless there are reruns. Then I watch something I've recorded and have been saving or I'll watch O'Reilly to see the segments on body language. I love those segments because I work security and have been able to put into practice what I've learned on the show. Other than that, I think O'Reilly does a lot of bloviating himself but I already know going in where he stands and what to expect. I can't stomach Olbermann because of his pretending to be objective when he's not. I haven't seen his show in a couple years....does he admit he has a leaning toward the left yet or is he still claiming to be objective? Anyone know?

I'd be willing to give Olbermann another view if he's honest about his political standing.

I watched both O'Reilly and Olberman (and Glenn Beck) yesterday and I can honestily say that the longest I could take was three minutes! Their obvoius positioning and pandering to their audience is disgusting. Bill was smiling broadly about having the top ratings for his network over Keith's, but what neither of them point out is that these are CABLE Network ratings and do not come even close to the big three! They are vieing for very specific audiences and I believe that the more successful Fox network is more successful because they get a lot of viewers who just want to see what kind of (stuff) is coming out from their guys. A good portion of their audience are people who do not agree with them! Bottom line? It's all just "entertainment" and should be viewed as such. Iget more real news from Public Television and the BBC!

I'll give you that the bickering is petty and almost childish. But I just youtubed the Garafalo/Olberman (sp?) rant about the tea party protests and I must say that, well, it's just plain disturbing to the point of being frightening. Olberman is absolutely fascinated by the sexual double-entendre, which I suspect many if not most of the protesters aren't (or at least weren't) even aware of at the time. But the fact that he is so hung up on it tells me that he views these folks as people not just to be disagreed with, or even strongly disagreed with, but as objects of riduclue, nothing more. And Garafalo flat out says that the protesters are racists (w/o offering any evidence, mind you), intellectually deficient and even mentally defective. And she is absolutely serious. A clearer picture of how those on the far-left view anyone who disagrees with them could not be painted. I've heard right-wingers described lefties in lots of ways, but never in all seriousness as physically defective. And before you say I'm over-reacting, make sure you view the interview for yourself.

If you watch Nannity or Beck or listen to Limbaugh or others on the right, you get just as ditorted and disturbing a picture. They are all extremists and not at all indicative of the average guy out there. Look at these blogs here_on one side you have extreme attacks and on the other side you have the same, but most of us can keep a civil tome and an honest exchange. In ano way do the extremists paint a "clearer picture" of the views of either side.

BF- Why you big dumb crazy HAHAHAHAHA--- I couldn't do it man. LOLOL

Posted by: Poguey on April 24, 2009 2:23PM CST
I've never or seen anyone seriously maintain that liberals are mentally retarded--literally--because of the stances they take. That's what Garafalo said, albeit in much larger words that stroked her already over-inflated opinion of how much smarter she is than the rest of us.

Posted by: MC on April 24, 2009 4:09PM CST
Why does anybody give a flip what Janean Garafalo has to say about anything. The world is full of people with braindead opinions, but most don't have a microphone/camera platform (thank God) to tell everybody what they thinkt. I watch O'Reilly not because I like his rude interrupting of guests or his arrogant attitude, but to hear the vast mix of opinions and facts from his many guests from both sides of the aisle. His show is much more then just entertainment.

I love O'reiilly and Beck. Here is alink about them wanting to
http://www.newshounds.us/2009/02/28/beck_and_oreilly_joke_about_torturing_democrats.phptorture

Democrats. Man, if I could waterboard BF or Granny grits or make them listen to the Bush Doctrine and force them to understand it would be a beautiful day. LOL.

Posted by: Nagaitcho on April 24, 2009 8:19PM CST
Anyone else see the contradiction of ChristianNation, and his wish to enforce his views through torture? Take the name of the Lord while defending the way of Satan.

I don't watch either of these guys, and if anyone ever turned on druggie limbaugh in my house, they'd go out the window following the radio.

Posted by: EvenKiel on April 24, 2009 11:43PM CST
So Garafalo said conservatives were "mentally retarded"? Literally? Really? That's not good! That's as bad as ChristianNation wanting to waterboard BF or Granny Grits. That remark makes it just as clear how the conservatives feel as Garafalo's remark about conservatives being "mentally retarded" shows us how liberals feel!

Ive heard of Oreilly but who is this olberman guy? does anyone watch him?

Posted by: DobberDeeDee on April 25, 2009 5:41AM CST
All of these shows, both TV and radio are contributing to the great divide in this country. It is not good. Whatever happened to civil discourse?

I am so tired of extremists on both sides tearing this great counry apart. It will be the ruin of us.

We are fools for watching any of this divisive stuff, in times when we need to pull together.

We have very big problems to solve. We need to start acting like a family. We are facing financial ruin and possibly a pandemic.

DDD--you rule! We may be on opposite sides, but I know that you are someone I can learn from and also be listened to! Thank you!

Posted by: granny grits on April 25, 2009 9:31AM CST
Christian Nation,
Your desire to water board those who don't agree with your far right politics should prompt you to consider a new name...Christian fails to adequately describe you.

Posted by: Nagaitcho on April 25, 2009 9:56AM CST
DDD, the pundits on the net and TV are nothing but propagandists, what they say has little to do with reality. Their purpose is to divide, and with predictable results. Listening to any of them, you get the thought that they got their methods out of a book written by Goebels. After a very short time, one begins to wish they'd take the same dose that Goebels did, and leave people with a brain to figure out the mess.

Launch yourself out the window while your at it nacho.

Strange, but somehow it seems to be my home. Which means I kinda control what I have to listen to. Which also means your opinion counts for about a minus 5, or minus 10 to the 10th magnitude.

Fairness and honesty in political reporting went out the window many years ago, I'm not holding my breath waiting for it to return. Honesty in politics? Absurd! And therefore, druggine limbaugh will survive. Honesty would end his life instantly.

EvenKeil-
Its not "mentally retarded" it's learning disabled yet another liberal being cruel to those that cannot protec themselves. George Bush was chosen by God. O'Reiley and Glen Beck speak the truth of God.

Posted by: Nagaitcho on April 25, 2009 11:36AM CST
CN, it's been a very long time since truth and politics were used in the same sentence. Truth is the opposite of politics. Those people speak the word of a committee of politicians, if that's your god, welcome to him, her, it, no matter what the name might be.

And change your screen name to something that fits, like the devils advocate. More fitting to your mind. Sorry about my mistake, your mind is whatever that committee wants it to be.

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 25, 2009 2:44PM CST
CN Bush was chosen by God, and Obama was chosen by God to replace him. I have yet to hear one word of God's truth out of any one of those radio and TV entertainers! "Mix politics with religion and you get politics!"

Posted by: DobberDeeDee on April 25, 2009 4:49PM CST
Hi Bigfoot - (and EvenK) Thanks again for the shoutout. See, if all the other libs and cons could get along (like we do) then all would be OK.....as long as everyone keeps their hands off my dough! HA!

Posted by: crazyinsane on April 25, 2009 5:32PM CST
Mix politics and religion and you get Witch hunts, genocide, and a society where everyone agrees and there is no dissent. It also makes for great TV!

Nag - You seem to have much insight about politics and truth and fairness and honesty and talk radio and "druggies" and God, etc. Enough insight to tell others where they are wrong on those subjects. Just where do YOU go for your information and education on these subjects to use to formulate YOUR beliefs and opinions and insight?

Posted by: racinenativemn on April 25, 2009 8:20PM CST
They evolve in his brain, silly.

Posted by: Nagaitcho on April 25, 2009 11:15PM CST
MC, I try to get facts, I know, something a con doesn't want to hear. Then I make up my own mind whether it's in my best interests, or in the interests of a corporate entity with no conscience. The druggie, rush, isn't going to give you truth, the truth is even the republican party is kinda embarrassed by his ranting and spouting male bovine excrement. But i sure hope the country makes the permanent connection between rush and republican as being one and the same. That would guarantee the cons would be in a permanent state of minority.

Or non existent.

Posted by: MC on April 25, 2009 11:49PM CST
All you did is expand your original rant nag. How about answering my question of WHERE do YOU go to get your "facts"?

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 26, 2009 12:17PM CST
Nag--I think you better tellhim. He is in desparate need to find those sources where the truth can really be found, instead of (as CN says) the unholy trinity of O'Reilly, Rush, and Beck! I once asked MC if he believed in objective facts and he said no!

Posted by: MC on April 26, 2009 12:59PM CST
Don't believe you ever asked me that question bf. Maybe you concluded that answer for me from some other discussion. Do you have the copy and paste of you asking me that question or of me answering "no" to it as in objective fact?

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 26, 2009 3:12PM CST
No, but I believe that you do. It's on one of your old blogs, so look it up.

Posted by: racinenativemn on April 26, 2009 3:54PM CST
i try to get facts? Was I right, nacho. Facts evolve in your superior brain.

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 26, 2009 5:43PM CST
If you can't find it, that's ok, it doesn't really matter. It was irrelevant and I shouldn't have brought it up to begin with, so I retract that statement.

Posted by: MC on April 26, 2009 5:58PM CST
Sorry, I don't save my old blogs like Dr Awk does. Let's see, I could say I asked you once if you despised Mexicans and you told me "yes". Now eveyone else is left with deceiding whether to believe my statement or not. There is no proof one way or the other, so everyone is left to simply pick a side. Imagine all the deceptive or damageing statements one could make about another. This only makes for destructive blogging.

Umm, if any of you bother to look, Reuters is considered quite reliable and fair, also accessible as is almost every newpaper in the world. Most of them post sources, check the sources. Don't listen to any political hack, I don't care what his views are, I want to know what happened. None of those political hacks are one bit more qualified to decide than I am, after I've gotten at least a few facts, and facts don't come from lumbaugh. (Misspelling deliberate.}

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 26, 2009 10:05PM CST
I agree MC, and was out of line for saying it. Forgive me.

Nagaitcho--excellent point. I also think that Associated Press is good at getting the basics out without adding any "extras". I also listen to NPR for what I consider to be "balanced and fair" reporting and more in-depth than just a blurb!

Posted by: DobberDeeDee on April 27, 2009 10:32AM CST
See Bigfoot, that is what I like about you. Way to go! You are a good guy.

Posted by: MC on April 27, 2009 12:58PM CST
Thank you nag for answering my question and Reuters is a good source. Just don't rely on their pictures too much.

Posted by: shedbedder on April 27, 2009 6:07PM CST
You have Conservative and Liberal TV and radio personalities. And FOX News fair and balanced ? MY BUTT.
Why does the far rifgt always complain about the mainstream media being liberal. It is MAINSTREAM. For the most part middle of the road. Conservatives quit your whining !

Posted by: crazyinsane on April 28, 2009 1:38AM CST
BY Fox not broadcasting Obamas address to the nation , FOX is balancing CBS, ABC and NBC who are all broadcasting it. Its fair but will only be balanced if one of the other networks stop the broadcast too. Two that show it two that don't.

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 28, 2009 7:32AM CST
Death Star-it has nothing to do with being "fair and balanced"! In fact, what it comes down to is ratings. Fox hopes that because "lie to Me" is a popular show, people will watch it and the ratings will go up -- which means more money for Fox. Bottom Line--money over public service! Sly like a Fox!

Posted by: zyra on April 28, 2009 7:33AM CST
Who the hick is Olber-whatever his name is.
Somebody upset, jealous about the numbers on ratings perhaps.

Posted by: 2Ball on April 28, 2009 7:49AM CST
Olberman's ratings are a tinkling alright.

Shedbetter you are naive. If the "mainstream" media were reporting properly, they wouldn't be going out of business.

Posted by: Bigfoot on April 28, 2009 11:27AM CST
Compare the "mainstream" TV News shows to the Cable Newtworks that O'Reilly is the king of. You must be referring to the newspapers that are going out of business, mainly because of the loss of revenue due to sites such as Craig'slist that doesn't charge for classified listings versus newspaper classified that make up the majority of newspaper revenue!

Posted by: shedbedder on April 28, 2009 12:24PM CST
Hey 2 ball, are you one of the people who think that FOX News reports the news without bias?

About This Blog
While I write on a daily basis, as a reporter, I'm new to blogging.
Rather than mix business with pleasure, I've decided to use this blog for writing about subjects different from my work on the Education Beat.
Since this is all new frontier to me, it may be a few days before I start a blog here devoted to education related topics, but I plan to do so. I'm no one trick pony.
On this blog, I will occasionally wax poetic on a variety of delightful topics, like the ethics of Charlie Brown or finding spiritual nourishment from bad TV.
All I ask is that, if you must comment, be kind. I do not suffer fools gladly.
Enjoy!
