The folks at Merriam-Webster, the dictionary people, this week introduced more than 100 new words to their ginormus book of words, including mondegreen, a noun defined as a word or phrase that results from a mishearing of something said or sung. Probably the best word ever for pop culture dorks (I consider myself a wannabe pop culture dork, what could be worse?) who chuckle at every misinterpreted lyric, none of which I can come up with on my own. Here are a few examples from the word people: "The ants are my friends," a mangling of "The answer, my friends," by Bob Dylan, to "There’s a bathroom on the right," a bungling of "There’s a bad moon on the rise," by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Merriam-Webster is asking people to submit their favorite mondegreen. So, what's yours, the Blogtastic Blogonator wants to hear it. Sing it if you'd like. Another new entry is racino which sadly has nothing to do with Racine. Though, if pronounced correctly, you might think it did.

Did you pick your own strawberries this season? Well, what did you do with them? Let me know. Strawberry shortcake. Strawberry jam. How did you use them? Surely you didn't eat them all fresh.
A delicious crop of fresh picked strawberries from Walvoord Farm Berries in Kansasville on opening day back in June.

The photograph on the front page of Wednesday’s Journal Times shows a very different Antonio J. Torres than the mugshot that ran on the front page of Tuesday’s Journal Times.

A mental image emerged while the story unfolded Monday following an Amber Alert for Torres' daugher, Liliana.
Who was this Antonio J. Torres who fled with his daughter after beating the young girl’s mother, his former girlfriend, ?
Surely he must have been some kind of monster.
Walworth County Sheriff's deputies eventually shot and killed Torres. The young girl was reunited with her mother. This family is left to make sense of what happened Monday on a Walworth County road.
The questions now: who is this woman who would share a candid snapshot of the man who beat her unconscious?
What was wrong with Antonio J. Torres, a man who would beat two women with whom he’d fathered children?
How could a man who would wrap his hands around the neck of a woman, one we might assume he loved, be the same man smiling with joy on a family outing with his young daughter?
Should he have been in jail? Why didn't he get help for whatever issues he had that compelled him to do what he did?
All the while, two very different pictures tell two starkly different stories of one man and the effect he had on many lives.

Yes, this sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it is not. Drunken Swede tries to row home from Denmark COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - A drunken 78-year-old Swede stole a dinghy after a night out in the Danish town of Helsingor and tried to row back to Sweden, but fell asleep halfway, Danish police said on Monday. When the man discovered he lacked the necessary funds to pay for the ferry from Helsingor to Helsingborg in Sweden on Saturday, he decided to row the five km (three miles) across the strait of Oresund that separates the two. He quickly grew tired and, trusting fortune and the currents to see him safely home, took a snooze at the bottom of the boat, where Danish police later found him out at sea, still asleep. The strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Police said the owner of the dinghy had decided not to press charges. I’m part Dane, paternally. My father was born in Denmark. I’ve been there twice in my life to visit family who still live there. I'm a proud Dane. I've even been to Danish language camp in Minnesota. I’ve often heard of the rivalry between Danes and Swedes. I’ve never put much stock in this and don’t feel I’m Danish enough to have a vested interest in said rivalry. The story, sent to me by my dear sister, who also is part Dane, elicited a hearty chuckle, though. I'm not sure what this does for the rivalry.

About This Blog
While I write on a daily basis, as a reporter, I'm new to blogging.
Rather than mix business with pleasure, I've decided to use this blog for writing about subjects different from my work on the Education Beat. Since this is all new frontier to me, it may be a few days before I start a blog here devoted to education related topics, but I plan to do so. I'm no one trick pony. On this blog, I will occasionally wax poetic on a variety of delightful topics, like the ethics of Charlie Brown or finding spiritual nourishment from bad TV. All I ask is that, if you must comment, be kind. I do not suffer fools gladly. Enjoy! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 0 rating(s)
