Are you without a sump pump as your basement is under inches of water or are you struggling to remove water-drenched items from your basement? Please use this blog to convey your needs with others that may be able to help.
Well...not yet...but darn that creek or river we live next to is creeping closer and closer. It's about 30-40 yards away from our home...and I am just about to freak out.
So...after a restless night...I woke up and looked outside and the river/creek has receded...thank God! Hopefully...we won't get anymore rain...and those who were affected by all this rain will be able to start cleaning up and drying out. I think I might go touch base with some neighbors to make sure they are okay today...especially the elderly ones. Stay safe all...
Got a hold of my parents finally.. They were evactuated 4 o'clock this morning. They said when they left the water was just about to run in the back door. They dont know when they will be able to get back in there. So dont know what kind of damage there is. I can only imagine. They had sump pumps going but said there really wasnt anywhere to pump to and now they had to turn off their electricity so no pumping going on.
I'm just sick over this whole thing. My mother in laws parents/brothers home is just across the street from my parents and she is worried sick over the damage. There is a lot of old photos and old (newly restored) furniture there.. ugh.. I cant stand this.
after the rain last August, and a flooded finished basement, we installed 2 sump pumps this spring...$2,000 later, we have not a drop of water through all this rain (knock on wood)...but, the thought was in my head all night that I would wake up to hear my dh cursing about water in our finished basement again!
Although, last August, with all the water we had, we are now experts on the topic, we put a spare pump in the crock and pumped water out the window...we also had two shop vacs going, which could not keep up. we put what we could up on blocks, put other things in plastic tubs (kids toys)...and kept going until the water receded. We also got these really good fans from Walmart that direct the air at the floor. They are curved and yellow...NOT a box fan, it would have never worked...and direct them under the walls to help dry out the walls. I also bought some stuff from radonseal.com called biozap and have kept cupfuls of it in the basement to get rid of the mold.
IHTH...I think we are all going to go thru an evolutionary changed and get webbed feet!
If anyone needs advice or help with water extraction I'd be happy to help. I,ve done hundreds of these and the main thing to remember is to get everything dry asap. A shop vacon wet carpet and pad is not going to work 90% of the time. Taking care of these problems quickly and correctly is key. My name is Roger, I own R-K carpet cleaning. my cell number is 262-620-0583. good luck everyone
Hey - if we're advertising, you can also call my hubby and me anytime. We've been in business serving the Racine/Kenosha area for 21 years now and have sucked many basements dry over that time. We're Mike's Carpet Masters at 262-886-9896.
A little question and I'm sure my parents know this stuff but I'm curious. Do you have to replace all dry wall when your basement has flooded?
Does anyone have any helpful hints and good advice on how best to handle things. Their basement is mostly cement and bricks but they do have a couple of walls of drywall.. They have their washer and dryer, pool table and other things like that still down there.
Just would appreciate any words of advice to those that have seen this kinda thing before.
we forced the fans under the walls with those hi-power dryers...then we called in service master and they did the same thing with their equipment. I was so concerned about mold because my son has autism and is very sensitive to just about everything. They have special equipment to test for moisture in the walls and ours came back dry. They would have ripped out the walls, if needed. Thankfully, our insurance paid for it as our pump went out...it was not a case of sewerage or overflow at that point in time...I also used the tea tree oil (biozap) to kill the mold and mildew where it was wet on the floor. it works wonders and smells good too. Good luck...it makes you so sick when this stuff happens. Hopefully with the declaration of a state of emergency their will be FEMA funds as most insurance will not pay for this stuff...
Racine County establishes disaster hotline Monday, June 9, 2008 9:00 AM CDT
Journal Times staff
Racine County Emergency Management has established a voicemail and email hotline for Racine County residents who were affected by the recent flooding.
Racine County residents who have experienced flooding or other types of damage as a result of the recent rain events are encouraged to call 262.636.3308.
This hotline is only for reporting the type and estimated cost of damage. Persons who need immediate response assistance should contact their local governments or first responder agencies.
They will be asked to leave their name, address, phone #, city, town or village and a brief description of the type of damage, along with the estimated dollar amount. Alternatively, residents can email the information to RCEmergencyManagement@goracine.org
All information will be submitted to Wisconsin Emergency Management. Wisconsin Emergency Management is responsible for compiling the information and recommending whether the extent of the damage warrants a request for federal assistance.
If carpet and drywall are wet with water that is not contaminated (not sewer water), it can be dried but needs to be done as quickly as possible - i.e. within 24 hours. After drying, the carpet and walls should have antifungal agents applied to them to help prevent mold from growing.
If the water was contaminated, carpeting and drywall needs to be replaced. Also, if walls are insulated or materials have been wet for longer than 24 hours, they should be replaced.
I took a walk earlier today to see what was happening in my neighborhood and met up with my favorite neighbor. He had the whole scoop about what was going on with all the other neighbors and apparently he is the only one on our block that didn't get water or sewage in his basement. That is six houses just on this little block that have/had water/sewage in the basements...but looking down the alley I see a lot of garbage piling up so I am sure there are many more homes that have/had water coming into the basements. We took a walk over to the bridge to see the creek/river/stream and it was still raging but it is receding. He told me that he was talking with his wife last night and told her that he was going to come over by us to help sandbag if it came to that...which was really heart warming. His wife said to him that she would help too. How sweet is that...! I wasn't kidding about the creek/river/stream getting closer and closer last night. I think I am going to call our insurance company tomorrow or the next day and find out if we have flood coverage...and maybe get better coverage. I know our deductible is $2000 which at this point in time is a lot of money...and I now see how easy something could happen. What an experience...for all of us!
I live on Luedtke ave on the root riverside. Our basement is completly flooded along with yard. Our whole area will be needing any help as can be given when the water receeds.
I am willing to help anyone at no charge to help clean or repair or do anything to help them from this flood. I keep watching the weather channel and seeing the homes flooded around the root river and my heart aches. Please email me at michaelsbc@yahoo.com and I will help. I own a local business and am known around town.
Thank you Michael you sound like a great guy. I'm sure my parents and the neighbors around would love any help that can be given. There will be a lot to do once they can finally get back home. I will definitely send your email along to them and let them know of your offer. I just hope my father isnt too proud to accept help. God bless all of you that have been so supportive and given your beautiful word of encouragement. I really means a lot to me.
