I happen to know one of their successes from early in his life, and every time I see his picture in the paper talking about the positive changes he has made, and his references to Mr. Schatzman, I am thankful they found each other. I think any program that will acknowledge the difficulties, but push to move these young men and women forward in a positive light while they look at all they are capable of is what is needed. It is often difficult to look past the negative things they may have done, but it doesn't mean that is all they have to give to the world. Keep up the good work!!

Funny though - other blogs about gangs or crimes get 80 or 90 posts mostly about how we should arm everyone and "bulldoze" neighborhoods and gate off communities and lock all members of gangs up for long prison terms (that won't raise taxes right?) and everyone's views as to who is to blame for gangs. Why nothing but silence when we are posed with the question "what kinds of programs do you think make the most difference?"?

Regardless of opinions, one thing I have noticed about this topic in general is that communication that reflects a modicum of mutual respect and dignity is rare indeed. You are correct in your assessment that when it comes to putting ideas out there for solutions, it is pretty darn quiet and that is a problem. If we are so polarizied as a community that we cannot start to put our thoughts, feelings (respectfully), and ideas out for discussion in an open forum such as this, we are a long way from being able to move forward to the things that will truly matter and make a difference. Racine: From my perspective the reactionary rhetorical posts seem to be all that we are capable of in Racine. Let's start to identify what we see as the real problems and what we think can be done about them. I see as problematic several different issues. * Law enforcement by the a police force too busy to enforce laws and send a message about where this city stands on the issues of law enforcement and what they are willing to do in that regard. Kurt Whalen where are you in all of this discussion ??? We need law enforcement to be more than just talk. * Parenting and children are huge issues and in my opinion where better than 50% of the effort needs to be focused. There needs to be hope for families and children at risk of being in the recruiting cross hairs of gangs in our neighborhoods. There are people and organizations who are working to make a difference in this area, but we need to do more. In general the apathy in this city needs to stop. As long as Racine as a community is willing to accept the status quo of our community's current status from a perspective of crime, behavior, education, and economy, nothing will change. We need to wake up as a community and start doing what we are capable of doing right here and now. We are capable cleaning up our town and regaining pride in our community. But sitting on our backsides and waiting for someone else to do it, won't get it done. Change starts with each of us living here. If you don't like what you are seeing on your block, pick up the phone, call the alderman, call the police, call neighborhood watch, camp out in Gary Becker's office. Do whatever it takes to create the changes that will improve your and your neighbor's lives. And don't tell me they won't let you, who is "they" anyway ??? If you want it bad enough you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. If you are not willing to be a real and active part of the solution, you really don't have any right to complain. We all find the time and resources for the things that matter to us individually. So if this city, our children, lives and lifestyles mean something to you and matter, I know that you can and will find the time. I know that I haven't provided any solutions and only a few suggestions and whole bunch of issues. I am willing to communicate with anyone who is serious about creating change in our community. This is my home, where I live and try to make a living.

While my daughters did not have gang affiliations, they knew youngmen that were associated with drugs and violence. Instead of forbidding my daughters to associate with these youngmen, I continued talking to them about making the right choices in life. Also, I used every opportunity presented to me to encourage the youngmen to change their lives. Some did and some did not. While, I agree that programs help change lives, I am more convinced that individuals can make a difference in the life of another. If one life is changed by something you do or say, you have made a difference in the community. As a single parent I found that it was very imporant to maintain open communication. Keep in mind that sometimes it is difficult to have open dialogue with teenagers. I found that I needed to listen a lot. I found out many things by accident. Parents must not be afraid to parent. We are not our childrens friends. If your child is doing something that is not right, speak out against it. You'd be surprised to find later that your child was actually glad that he/she were disciplined. I can't imagine that there is no pain greater than sitting in a court room with your son/daughter and listening to a Judge hand down a sentence of life in prison or burying a child. It behooves us as parents to provide guidance and support to our children. Parents must be role models. Another important factor in raising children is teaching them about GOD. Pray with your children and for them. Let your son or daughter know that it is okay to be different. Too often, our children have the urgency to fid in wiht groups that theiy truly do not have anything in common with. And finally, as soon as you recognize that your child is changing, start asking questions. If you are close to your child you will begin to see signs that a problem exist.
