Ask the Online Editor: Inaugural Post
Posted by: B-Wi on November 4, 2009 at 11:34AM CST
You all have been posting your comments and questions about the Web site here for some time. We want to give you a central location where you can get responses from the people who manage the site. Here it is!

First some quick introductions: the bloggers here will be Bridget Thoreson and Brenda Wishau. Bridget was recently promoted to online editor (her first day was Monday). Before that, she was assistant local editor here, and before that, a Journal Times reporter.

Brenda is one of the online programmers - you may know her as B-Wi, her JT online moniker.

Bridget will handle reader comments related to the editorial decisions of the Web site, such as how we decide which stories get placed there, how stories have developed over time, what special projects we are working on.

Brenda is the one to ask about technical matters - where to find things on the site, what to do if you’re having trouble with something, why things are set up the way they are.

What we will do: Post and solicit discussion on Web matters throughout the week. We will do our best to respond to you in the comments section during business hours. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll try to find out.

What we ask of you: Be specific when you’re discussing something. Links are great. And we ask you to be civil, as if you were here talking to us face-to-face.

To start this off, we’re asking you what suggestions you have for improving the site. What features would you like to see?

I really miss the "next" feature from the old site. When I'm reading a news story, it is really convenient to hit "next" and read the next story.

Best of luck with the new position, Bridget, and thanks to Brenda for her ongoing support.

You want us to be civil? Cheese whiz, what ever happened to the sanctity of disrespect? lol just kidding

I uploaded some pictures to my profile a few weeks back and they sat pending for a couple weeks. Then they just disappeared. Any reason as to why? I was thinking about trying again but haven't had the time. Probably try this weekend again when I have some more time.

i think this is a great idea....it probably wont keep some people from ranting on the individual news article sites about these types of issues.....and we'll chalk that up to (you can't fix stupid)...lol...but we know now that you're at least trying......best of luck....and thank you in advance.

StormyKnight -

When photos are uploaded, they are manually approved by JT staff.

If the photos are uploaded over a weekend, they may not be approved until Monday.

I would try to upload them again, and if they sit in a pending status for more than 1 business day, let me know.

I will make sure they get approved.

Avenging Angel - Thanks for your input, we appreciate it.

Regarding the "next" feature, that has been replaced with a list of articles in the same "category". There is also a bulleted list for our most popular stories.

The bulleted lists are under the Yahoo ads that follow the story.

Thanks agains for your questions and comments; keep 'em coming!

Congratulations on the promotion!

You guys really hit a home run with the monthly crime map.

Other than that, I think this site runs really well and appreciate the forum to write, read and interact.

Thanks Brenda!
I'm with rob- I'm liking this site a lot!

Okay, my question is why do you guys visit other sites to glean news stories and ideas, but then refuse to give credit where it is due? Why not buy pictures that are better and more timely than your own slow to get there reporter/photographers?

How much are stories and photos worth to the JT. Instead of stealing a scoop from competitor, why not offer to pay a decent rate for the occasional man or woman on the spot?

Hi Huck Finn - I'm afraid I can't speak to the first part of your question, since I'm not sure what you're referring to. As I mentioned in the post, specifics are great. I can say that our newsgathering practices are strictly on the up-and-up.

As to purchasing photos and stories, we do that on occasion when staff is unable to cover something. For instance, you may have seen the photo - of the late Tuesday night crash in which two police officers were injured - on today's front page, by Brian Stabler. That is a photo we purchased.

Hope this helps!

Brenda & Bridget

I have been having trouble with the site for about a week and a half. When I go to "My community" I can't see any blogs or pictures on the left. I'm using Explorer 6. JT Tech Guy says you guys did a temp patch. Any help would be appreciated. Up to that point I never had trouble. I also enjoy the site.

Edge Distance,

I just tested the community home page in IE6, and it worked fine for me. I cannot recreate the error you are receiving.

It sounds like it may be a browser issue. Try resetting it back to the default settings and then make sure Javascript is enabled.

Clearing out all cookies and temporary internet files might help as well.

A better idea might be to upgrade your browser to a higher version of IE, or install Firefox. IE6 isn't really supported anymore.

Keep us updated!
