Two Davids and a Syesha
Posted by: Ann on May 7, 2008 at 11:42PM CST

AFTER WEDNESDAY'S ELIMINATION: And there you have it: All is right in the "Idol" world and Jason Castro was sent hom Wednesday night.

And, I have to agree with Ryan that he looked awfully relieved. Jason, I think I lot of us are relieved along with you.

It will be interesting to see if he tries to do a CD and if he can find a producer/record company to work with him. His strengths are so limited and I just don't see people buying his CD in any kind of respectable number.

Also Wednesday, we were treated to a performance from perennial "Idol" guests Maroon 5, and from former "Idol" runner-up Bo Bice.

So our Top 3 are emerging songstress Syesha Mercado, resident rocker David Cook and robotic crooner David Archuleta. It's almost a given that Syesha goes home next week, but who knows?

If it's set up like it was last year, I think they each get three songs, with one of them being a judges' choice.

So if you got to pick a song for each one, what would you pick? And do you think Syesha can survive past next week, or will it be the Battle of the Davids, as we've all predicted for weeks now?

AFTER TUESDAY'S PERFORMANCES: We celebrated “the 500 most influential rock songs” on the Top 4 of “American Idol” Tuesday night.

And it has never been clearer who should go home.

Each contestant sang two tunes again, but the judging format was changed back to the way it’s always been, presumably in an effort to keep Paula from getting confused. It seemed to work, as Paula was downright normal (which was kinda boring, actually).

David Archuleta owned the competition this week with two more impeccable vocal performances. Say what you will about his mannerisms and his one-dimensional singing style. He has some singing chops and he’s not afraid to use ’em. He did Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” which was pretty much more of the same Archuleta we’ve seen in the past. But then he sang Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.” It was beautifully understated and, well, appropriately tender. I was a little concerned, however, with the super-duper closeup at the end -- I was sure the camera was going to go up his nose. Thankfully, the song ended in the nick of time and we were spared a cruise up Archuleta’s nostrils.

David Cook also brought some game. He took on Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” (which he pointed out came out the year he was born -- thanks for making me feel old, Cook). It was OK, but it really wasn’t as creative as I expected/wanted. He just kind of rocked it up a little. But I don’t know what else he could have done. It also wasn’t a good song to show off his vocals. He did better with The Who’s “Teenage Wasteland” song (which I know has a different actual title, but I’m too tired to look it up). The arrangement seemed a little weird, but it still allowed him to be that rocker with the good voice we’ve all come to appreciate.

Syesha Mercado kicked some butt on Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” It was the perfect song for her, allowing her to do her vampy thing. It was fun and memorable, and that’s exactly what she needed it to be. Her second song, Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” wasn’t as memorable, but it was still heartfelt and well done. She didn’t take too well to Randy’s criticism, though, and strangely broke down in tears. She said it was because the song “meant a lot” to her. The tears could hurt or help her, but I think it will help her. Especially in light of the disaster that was Jason Castro.

Oh, Jason -- in the words on Simon Cowell: What were you thinking?! He proved without a doubt that one needs more than just dreadlocks to sing a Bob Marley song well. I love Bob Marley, and Castro’s performance of “I Shot the Sheriff” was just torturous and amateurish. Understandably, the judges didn’t like it so much (Paula could only say she loves Jason). So what does he follow up with? Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” -- and he forgets the lyrics! OMG! Dude! You’re in the Top 4 of “American Idol”! How about at least pretending you deserve to be there?!

So Jason should go home, if there’s any sense of fairness left in this world (or, you know, on “Idol“). But who knows? This point in the competition is as much a coin toss as anything. I really think the Davids are safe, though (and I hope I didn’t just jinx them …)

And Ryan announced at the beginning of the show that three of the Top 4 have been No. 1 in votes in previous weeks. I wonder who wasn’t? It has to be Jason or Syesha, right?

So what did you think? Were Jason’s performances enough to finally oust him? Or will his young fans keep him instead of Syesha? Or, dare I say, will there be a bigger surprise elimination?

Terrible is the word I would use to describe Jason last night, and just as I thought he might at least make you forget how bad he was earlier, he forgets the lyrics... I don't know how he can stay either, but never doubt the power of a bunch of teenie boppers that just love him... Ann, He has to go just as you stated.

yeah I've always thought that Castro is a cool guy, but wow. He picked songs by The BOBS and failed miserably. If he was gonna do Marley, "Redemption Song" and "No Woman No Cry" would have been better choices. And he shoulda just left Dylan alone and done a Simon and Garfunkle song or something.

that Archuleta, again, made me want to vomit. After hearing countless covers of Stand By Me (with John Lennon's being the best, of course), I thought it was a song you couldn't ruin. That was until I heard that kid's version last night. Terrible.

I am a big fan of Jason's but I too agree that he should go home. I was really bummed by his song choice...though, I think he would have done a great job with the Bob Dylan song...it's a bummer.

Ya mon

I really likee Syesha last night, although she didn't need to go on and on about why she loved the song. It was already said in the video prior to her singing the song. If Jason doesn't get voted out today I will stop watching...yeah right...not!

Even-though David A. kicks butt with the vocals I still like watching and listening to David C. more. I am sticking with David C. to win and David A. to come in second.

I liked that Rascal Flatts were in the audience. Those guys are great!

"likee"? That's suppose to say "liked"... :)

Jason Jason!! I thought every stoner knew the words to Tamborine Man! What was he thinking?!? Good bye Pretty stoner boy!

I am predicting a voting SHOCKER tonight...

Posted by: crazy4cars on May 7, 2008 2:05PM CST
And whom do you predict Musicfan???

It will be a real shame if anyone other than breathysinger, forgot the lyrics, bad song picker, dumb hair style guy, goes home. That is just my opinion though. I don't know if I would watch anymore if Jason doesn't go.

Posted by: MusicFan on May 7, 2008 3:26PM CST
I completely agree it will be a sham..I mean shame if anyone other than Jason goes but I just have a feeling he may survive...I really hope I am wrong.

Posted by: The Raytown Kid on May 7, 2008 3:50PM CST
syesha is the shocker pick to go

Posted by: Ann on May 7, 2008 3:57PM CST
I don't think I'd call Syesha a shocker to go, considering that Jason obviously has quite a fan base of tweeners who have all the time and gumption to vote repeatedly.
Jason should go, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Syesha go instead.
But if one of the Davids went, that would be a shocker.

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 7, 2008 4:37PM CST
David Cook is gonna be booted tonight. That's my prediction, honestly.

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 7, 2008 4:42PM CST
Just kidding.
Like Simon says" I'd be packing your bags, if I were you"
Jason seems to think this is a joke IMO

Posted by: crazy4cars on May 7, 2008 5:25PM CST
The only joke is that Jason is still around...Raytown, you may get your chance to hang out with loserboy soon...

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 7, 2008 9:14PM CST
Bye, bye Jason. Justice is served!

Posted by: The Raytown Kid on May 7, 2008 10:21PM CST
yeah crazy, we smoked a spliff about a half hour ago

it's funny that you call a nice guy that finished 4th in your precious little show a "loserboy," as if you've ever done anything with your life

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 7, 2008 11:03PM CST
I give Jason credit for having thick skin and being himself.
Syesha has the best showmanship and brightest personality, she's down to earth and a good public speaker, unlike David A. That boy needs some help with speech. He is way too shy and the other David C. is so nonchalant, it's like he could care less.

Posted by: MusicFan on May 7, 2008 11:55PM CST
Well, no shocker...whew. Gray Kitty I really thought it might be David C.... I definitely did not want that but you never really know.

I think Jason will do just fine outside of Idol. He is a niche musician. The niche just isn't mainstream music. Mainstream appeal is what Idol should & sort of is about.

Raytown chill on the negativity towards crazy4cars...I am sensing some un-bob marley like bad vibes man... remember...to each his own man, to each his own...peace, love , harmony.

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 8, 2008 12:08AM CST
Jason could always be a model for Calvin Klein or Abercrombie & Fitch.

Posted by: crazy4cars on May 8, 2008 8:51AM CST
Raytown, It's not my precious little show, but I do watch when I can. You have been defending Jason so I assumed you had a man crush on him and would smoke HIS spliff. All he had to do is sing two songs and he stunk at both and forgot words on one of them. I'm sure he didn't have to go to work a regular job, clean his house, mow the lawn, or run errands.
Since you don't even know me, how do you know what I've done with my life?

Posted by: CaseyN on May 8, 2008 9:20AM CST
I think Syesha should win with with David A. coming in second. They are all wonderful singers but Syesha has a very sexy, soulful voice and can sing just about anything. She will go far. David A. seems to like the slow ballads most. He reminds me of Josh Groban. David C. rocks out and will also go far, but I am pulling for Syesha.

Posted by: yousaidwhat? on May 8, 2008 9:48AM CST
Well, I am with Raytown...I really like Jason's style and voice. He's not "cookie cutter" pop like others on the show. He has his own style and I "dig" it. Crazy4cars...I doubt Raytown had a "mancrush" on him...sounds like his music tastes may be more diverse than yours. I do think Jason has a great career ahead of him...I see him in a singer songwriter role and I will be one of the first to buy one of his cd's. And Raytown...you're right about singing a Simon and Garfunkel...that would have suited him perfectly!

"I shot the Tambourine Man"

LMAO. You HAVE to be a stoner to say something like that. But I gotta aadmit...I was cracking up. That was too funny.

And he seems just fine with being off the show. He seems like a cool, mellow guy. No reason to hate him. Plus he will get to tour all summer - I am sure he'll love that.

David Cook - since day one has been my guy. He is thee only Idol contestant EVER of whom I would buy their music.

I think DC should sing...Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas OR Bloody Sunday by U2.

I wish David A would TRY to rock out. He is just this little nerdy kid in my eyes. This goody goody annoying putz. Sorry, but I dont like him even though I COMPLETELY realize his amazing talent. He should sing Its the End of the World as We Know it by REM OR Purple Rain.

SYE should sing a Hannah Montana song to take the votes away from DA. :)

Posted by: yousaidwhat? on May 8, 2008 10:40AM CST
I agree David A. does have amazing talent, but will be short lived in the music world...comaring him to a Barry Manalow...who is also talented, but not my cup of tea.

Posted by: Ann on May 8, 2008 10:50AM CST
I could see David A. going down the Micheal Buble/Josh Groban career path, and they've done pretty well.
I think there's still a market for crooners; they just aren't in the "mainstream."

Posted by: Cheers on May 8, 2008 11:13AM CST
I dont really see him as a crooner really. I could see him going down the the Christian Easy Listening route though..

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 8, 2008 1:01PM CST
Cheers I also thought "I shot the Tambourine man" comment was hilarious coming from Jason. He's a cool guy for making fun of himself.

Posted by: myview on May 8, 2008 1:18PM CST
Although I like them all I think Syesha will be next to go. I think the final 3 all have a good voices and all have different styles. This will be a tough one but They could all definatley make it in the singing business if they play their cards right. It will be interesting to see who the winner is. I wish them all good luck.

Posted by: Gray Kitty on May 8, 2008 1:43PM CST
I'd really like Syesha to win. David A. already has a carreer down the road. I don't think David Cook has enough energy or desire. He puts me to sleep even though he's supposingly a rocker.
