RACINE — A 51-year-old man intentionally emptied a container of lantern fuel last week and lit a match in the hopes of burning down his Town of Burlington home, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in Racine Circuit Court.

Daniel G. Ackerman, 6834 Wheatland Road., was charged Monday with one count of arson and one count of first degree recklessly endangering safety. If convicted, Ackerman faces 52½ years in prison and $125,000 in fines. Cash bond was set for Ackerman at $100,000 on Friday.

According to the complaint released Monday afternoon, at about 1 a.m. Thursday, police were called to the address where they found Ackerman lying in the snow as smoke billowed from his house.

Police also said they found Ackerman’s 15 and 17-year-old daughters standing outside and his 22-year-old son inside the house attempting to douse a fire with water from the sink.

The girls told police “that they were ... inside the home when their father, Daniel Ackerman, told them to leave (and) that the house was going down,” according to the

complaint.

The girls got dressed and went outside where they allegedly saw flames coming out of a window. The girls, who called 911, reported that they saw their brother throw items such as a burning chair out of a window as he attempted to put out the fire.

“Both girls (said) that their parents were beginning the divorce process and had been fighting that evening,” the complaint said. “Both girls further said that their father had been drinking and that their mother had left and gone to a friend’s house to end the fight.”

In addition to the chair, officers said they found a burnt corkboard and an empty gallon can of lantern fuel outside. Inside, they said they noticed a trail of burnt carpeting from the living area to the dining area that ended in a pile of smoldering paint supplies with a large book of matches nearby.
