The office is awfully quiet this morning...and the local bars have advertised "hunting widow" weekend events. Deer-hunting season opens Saturday--do you know anyone who's headed up north with their blaze-orange gear and gun?

The sign says it all, “World’s Best Burger.” As you hit the intersection of Highways 11 and 36 in Burlington, there it is, Fred’s, 596 N. Pine St. The restaurant proudly lays claim to the title — “World’s Best Burger.” What do you think? What do you recommend from the menu? Where do they serve the World’s second best burger? A year ago, a Dallas sports reporter mentioned Fred’s in a story about the Dallas Cowboys naming Burlington native Tony Romo as starting quarterback. Closer to home, a Chicago White Sox fan backed up the restaurant’s contention that it serves the “World’s Best Burger.” (Hit control F and search for the word Fred's). Tell us what you think.

It's amazing to consider the level of resources available on the Burlington Historical Society site, when you remember that Burlington is a city of not much more than 10,000 people. There are databases, photos, articles on all sorts of points of history, and the site is updated regularly. Check it out: |
