Did anyone get out to Maxwell Street Days? Boy, it has certainly
changed since I was a kid in the 60's. Remember all the stores we had
downtown and the great bargains? I remember my mom buying all my back
to school clothes from Wee Moderns for fabulous prices. My brothers
received shiny new trucks from Firestone and Ben Franklin and Kesslers
always had a huge supply of great toys and trinkets. Things have certainly changed--there are few stores left, and those that are here don't have many good deals. Stunned by the lack of merchandise, I wandered through Wehmhoff Park and my eye caught a bunch of brightly colored handbags. Always a sucker for a nice handbag I raced over in search of a bargain. Was I ever surprised. The surprise was definitely on me however, as the cheapest handbag that I could find hovered right around $95. OK, maybe at the Mall, but certainly not for Maxwell Street days when most people are looking for something great to buy with the change they unloaded from their piggy banks. So, instead, I focused on the library book sale--now that was a bargain and I still had enough left over to refill my pig! Thursday July 24, 2008

I love a good yard sale like most people--it's fun to hunt for bargains
for the house, or gently used clothing for the grandkids. It's cheap
and it's fun. My big pet peeve though are the giant signs with numerous
arrows directing traffic to a specific address--only to drive the
entire circuitous route and find out that the sale was last week! My
goodness, please, after those garage sales are over--please take your
signs down. It is quite frustrating to be driving around for nothing.
While I am at it--some of the signs are incredibly tiny and hard to
read--I wish people would just add a couple of inches to their letters
so the signs are visible from the road. This will bring tons more
traffic to you sale and net you more money, which is why you went to
all the trouble to set up the sale in the first place!

I am not a huge Packer fan, but have respect for the team and it's history. I am on the verge of losing all respect! How can the Packers let Brett go? And for who, Aaron who.... Rogers? Not starting a Brett who want to play for the Pack is just the worse football choice in all history. I feel for the fans! How can Mr. Thompson do something this stupid and not lose his job?

What a wonderful outcome for the St. Vincent de Paul store in
Burlington. After losing their lease, it looked as if the store would
have to shutter its doors forever. Thankfully, the owners of Schuette
Daniels furniture store had the perfect place for them to
relocate--next to the Plaza Theatre. Although it will serve only as a
food pantry for now, it looks quite promising that the thrift store
will reopen. What a blessing for those who run the store, as well as
the many families who have come to rely on their generosity.
Additionally, it's great to see a business filling that vacant store
front again.

I can't even remember the number of times we have had overnight guests
at our house and we got so caught up in reminiscing and visiting that
we forgot to call the police department to let them know a car would be
parked on the street. Quite often we would awaken to a bright white or
yellow ticket tucked obtrusively beneath the windshield wiper with a
big fat fine attached. No amount of cajoling, begging or pleading would
erase this fine--we got the usual answers..."well ma'am, you should
know the rules" or "If I break this rule for you-I'd have to break it
for everyone, and now that wouldn't be fair, would it?" I wanted to
scream--YES, YES It is fair because it was happening to us! But I shut up and paid the fine for our relatives because I didn't feel
that Grandma or my 75 year old diabetic aunt should have to fork out
the dough for my stupidity. Well, get this--those days are over. In their immense wisdom, the police department realized it was costing them more to enforce the law and deal with the numerous phone calls to report the car on the street than they were making in fines. Yeah! too bad, my grandma and aunt can no longer take advantage of this--may they rest in peace-but now everyone else can. Everyone else, that is--unless you live in the downtown area--then you are still stuck with paying for special permits-or calling the cops when you need to park for a longer period of time. I think this is a great idea--how about you? Wednesday July 9, 2008

I sincerely believe that this weekend there's no greater way to spend a night than going to see "Les Miserables School Edition" as it's presented by the CATHE Center and Haylofter's. Admittedly biased as I am (I'm a member of the cast), it's an amazing production overflowing with energy and creative genius. The cast is comprised of of only 18 year olds and under, including students from a huge amount of schools throughout southeastern Wisconsin. The play has been in production for only eight weeks, but through the incredible effort of the cast and production crew, we've managed to present an incredible opportunity for the community to experience the wonderful "Les Miserables" like they've never seen it before. As if that weren't enough, 10% of ticket profits go to the Transitional Living Center of Burlington. Tickets are available online at catheonline.com for $12.50 or at The Daily Brew in Burlington for $12. Alternatively, you can buy tickets when you arrive at the play, although it's recommended to buy them ahead of time to assure that you'll be able to acquire one. The play itself takes place at the BHS Auditorium at 400 McCanna Parkway. Shows are at 7:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - as well as a final matinee Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. As a member of the cast, I can assure you that there is truthfully no better way to spend an evening. Monday July 7, 2008

OK, I know that people love their fireworks, we do too--but really is
it too much to ask to stop setting them off by at least 11 p.m.? Even
midnight--but please, 3 a.m? Anyone else spend a few sleepless nights
this weekend while some intense party goers blew off firecrackers,
roman candles and the like? We had to close the windows after scraping
our little Bischon Frise off the ceiling fan - some of those noisy ones
were reminiscent of a howitzer going off--I can only imagine what it
sounded like to the dog. On the flipside-the fireworks were awesome this weekend and it was very pleasant to watch them without being devoured by mosquitoes, wasn't it? We saw fireworks at Grand Geneva, Burlington and Paddock Lake--all were great. Who had the best in the area? |
