BURLINGTON — As Tony Romo’s star rises with the Dallas Cowboys, his annual youth football camp at Burlington High School rises with him.

“It’s just neat,” Romo said. “I know when I was this age, it would have been great to talk to the starting high school quarterback, much less a good college or an NFL guy, so I think I know how it made me feel.”

Four years ago, former Burlington High School quarterback Romo came to town as a star college quarterback and fresh face to the NFL. For the last two years, he came as an NFL quarterback waiting for his big break.

This year they get to sweat and hustle under the hot summer sun under the watch of one of the NFL’s most popular players.

BURLINGTON — Heading south on Highway 83 toward the city’s southern boundary, the vistas quickly become rural. And a county developer wants to incorporate part of that scenery with his plans for a new residential development proposed for the area adjacent the Burlington Manufacturing and Office Complex.

Mount Pleasant-based Newport Development is in the early stages of seeking approval for the proposed development, which Newport President Ray Leffler said Wednesday is yet to be named. Preliminary plans call for 140 single-family homes and more than 100 condominium type units, that will range from duplexes to four-unit buildings.

What city officials are particularly pleased with is that the development is proposed to keep nearly half of the 180-acre site as green space. Leffler and Mayor Claude Lois said the development would be designed as a conservancy-style development that clusters homes within large areas of green space.

BURLINGTON — Seven years ago, David Torgler was preparing to go for a bike ride when the phone rang.

It was a job consultant — a “headhunter” — telling him about the city administrator’s opening in Burlington.

Although eyeing city administration jobs in Colorado, Torgler — at the time the village administrator in Itasca, Ill. — was intrigued enough with Burlington to accept the post here, taking over for former Administrator Mark Fitzgerald.

Seven years and a world of change later, Torgler is leaving Burlington to become administrator in Winter Park, Colo. Torgler said not only will the job provide professional challenges for him, it will allow the avid outdoorsman many opportunities to ski and to bike. He begins his new job
Aug. 13.

BURLINGTON — Burlington’s next mayoral election is 10 months away; eight months away if you consider the prospect of a primary.

But with Mayor Claude Lois’ recent announcement that he would not seek re-election when his term expires next April, two potential candidates have already announced their intentions to run for the part-time, $7,200-a-year post.

And, for all their differences, the two announced candidates already have a couple of things in common. Both are incumbent aldermen and both represent the same 2nd Aldermanic District. (Burlington residents elect two alderman for each of the city’s four aldermanic districts, one in an even year and one in an odd.)

Announcing their candidacies this month are four-term incumbent Robert Miller, the City Council’s president, and first-term Alderman Peter Girolamo.
