Registering beer kegs has become a hot issue across the county. Now Burlington has given it a preliminary OK.
The group Focus on Community has been pushing for these laws, which supposedly make it easier for cops to track down who bought and sold kegs to minors. Racine adopted it, and Caledonia said no. Is it necessary? Yes, writes Alderman Peter Girolamo: "Keg registration is not the biggest issue we are facing, nor is Burlington the biggest city facing issues with underage alcohol use. Those facts should not deter all communities from passing an ordinance to require keg registration on all containers of alcoholic beverages of two gallons or larger. There are numerous other changes that could also have a positive effect on cutting back on underage use of alcohol. That does not let communities off the hook to do everything possible for the good of our younger citizens who often cannot make the correct decision on this matter. As representatives of the citizens, we must do the right thing, even if it requires making a decision not considered to be the most important on our agenda. If it prevents only ONE accident or death, it is more than worth the small effort it will take to implement this program. We should not be followers, but be leaders on issues such as this."
