Second-Hand Smoking
Posted by: Kaitlyn M. Ulmer on August 13, 2008 at 7:40PM CST

Now, there are many establishments with smoking and nonsmoking sections and at most bars, you can expect to see a few lit cigarettes. So, I’ve opted to become a second-hand smoker. It lets me take more fifteen-minute breaks, talk with my friends and get similar effects to smoking without paying nearly as much.

However, some may argue that I am getting the short end of the stick because second-hand smoke may actually be more harmful to your health than first-hand smoking. If this is true, my reply would be that at least I’m only a social second-hand smoker. By no means do I go seeking it out.

Now, is it such a bad thing to sacrifice your health for friendship? Our connections to other people are the only thing we really have in this world. Everything else can be easily taken away.

haha... funny... just a few bumps in the road that i see....
1. you dont need to smoke to take more breaks - you could decide to be a compulsive eater and have to take more breaks so you can eat snacks.... (p.s. when did smokers get the "take as many smoke breaks as you want" priveledge? cause i dont get that at my place of employment)
2. you're getting shafted as a second-hand smoker... health issues aside, all you're going to get is smoke smell in your clothes/hair, occasionally burning smoke in your eyes, exposure to sometimes undesirable weather conditions, etc.... and you're totally missing the one and only benefit (if you want to call it that) from smoking - the nicotine..

I am a voluntary second-hand smoker too and it's the hair and clothes thing that bothers me most....
but I do get to visit with my friends. I just limit my exposure and try not to get out there more than once or twice a week.

I'm semi-retired, so I don't have the work-break situation at all. And as I recall, when I did work, those smoking breaks were taken in conjunction with the normal break.

sometimes i wish it was the 60's so that i could just smoke and drink at my desk...... remember that tv series that was on last year or maybe the year before.... i think it was called mad men or something.... about the men who worked at that advertising agency set in the 60's (i think).... they had drinks and cigarettes alllllll day long!

i am a smoker that needs to quit. i found this blog to be amusing. my wife is constantly on me to quit, i stink. i shower everyday and brush my teeth 3 times a day and it still smells. i have tried soooo many times to quit. the thing that made my mind up was last night my six year old, my little first year lighthouser, my all too bright for six looked at me and said, when you die who is going to be my dad? i was startled and said why would you ask me that, and he said that smoking kills you fast and that all the smoking that i do i should be dead here soon, i am quitting tomorrow. lol

How anyone can believe that second hand exposure is more dangerous is something I'll never understand. Unless there are different chemicals coming out of each end. Just plain silly, and to me it shows a willingness to lie and distort any facts to fit the arguement.
Besides, which is more dangerous, second hand smoke, or the air pollution from cars, factories, power plants, etc.

I am one of those crabby, non-smokers that HATES cigarettes, the smoke, smell and the mess of cigarette butts litering the area.

Get me straight, I don't hate smokers. When i stand on my soap box about the dangerous effects of passive smoking (2d and 3d hand smoke), I think too many smokers think my distaste is towards them and not the dangerous, addictive, cancer causing, life altering, invasive sticks that hang in such a sexy way outside their mouths. Cigarettes dirty their hands and nails and litter the sidewalk, the side of the road and that giant ashtray available to all smokers--the beach!

How a smoker can say that it is ok to smoke when children are present and not feel funny about it is beyond me. I take the same stance on drinking in front of children.

How a smoker say it is ok to smoke in a restaurant and not think it bothers other people to have to breath the smoke is odd, because, apart from my grandparents, I know very few people that smoke and eat at the same moment. So, you can enjoy and finish your meal, but it is ok, to light up when someone else is eating...yuck!

This blog was originally a light hearted attempt to go over the Kenosha ordinance being considered...but, as much as I try to be light-hearted about the effects of smoking on the smoker and those around them...it just irritates me.

If it were not such an invasive, dirty and life-altering habit, maybe I would not care so much. No, I need something to gripe about...so, I pick on smoking. And if someone ever approaches you while you are smoking and hands you a quarter, that is me! It is just my way of paying you back for the part of your cigarette I inhaled without your permission..I know cigs are expensive. I just thought I would help support your habit.

when i do quit smoking, im going to save the money i would be spending on cigarettes and use it to get breast implants.... at least i think i will... lol... and that is SO not like me to do something like that, but it's not so much an aesthetic issue for me, its a sizing issue... like, i dont fit into women's dresses and blouses that are made for women with a chest and i'm sick of padded bras........... or if i dont do that, i'll just save it for a sweet tattoo or vacation or other cool purchase...... i've tried quitting once, and it was pathetic..... i definitely need to use the patch or something when i do decide to quit (again)....... and the main reason i want to quit is money, health issues are second

I wish our governor had a back bone like the Illinios governor State Ban.
The Bars in Illinios are not hurting at all.
The Tavern Leauge is so worried. Boo Hoo my
chain smoking customers will stay home..They can just go sit in their cars so a few minutes.
They will get more non smoking customer who don't stink and throw butts all over the place.
Just remember kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray. With the price of a pack of smokes and gas prices I'd give up the smokes. State Fair
$9.00 a pack does anyone out there really pay that much for them?

I love the non smokers. Have any of you smoked? You sit here and say just quit. If it was that easy then we would. JUst like that ice cold beer calms you down from a hard day, that nice marlboror does it for me. Each day more places ban smoking yet it never seems like enough for the anti groups. Yeah I have a bad habit, but its mine. It's my choice to smoke. What kind of bad things do you people do? You don't see anyone telling you it's bad and to stop. It's our choice so just drop it people. And as far as the butts comment, they did study showing McDonalds wrappers are found more offen then cig butts. So yeah how bout you ban them to.

I don't think anyone has ever blown a McDonalds wrapper up my nose before.

I don't understand the teen by me is 14 or 15 at
the most. He rides his bike up and down the steet and all around south park with a cigarette. Don't you have to be 18 to buy them? I don't think his mom smokes.
All these kid's are getting awards in school for
D.A.R.E. then smoking in high School or shortly after. It's not like years when allot of people smoked and we did not know about all the lung and other health risks. I do know 6 of my friends and family members who quit cold turkey.
My parents never smoked my mom died of smokers type of cancer second hand. She worked in an office filled with smoke. Went square dancing and came home coughing. I also think hair spay in spray cans caused lund damage.

I know it's had to quit. But please try...for you friends and families.
