Martini Madness
Posted by: Kaitlyn M. Ulmer on June 24, 2008 at 10:14PM CST

On a Monday night I drove to Henry & Wanda’s, craving a martini. I could have gotten a margarita pitcher for a lot cheaper, but, I reasoned, margaritas are for Girls Night Out, not the Monday Doldrums.

After looking at the martini menu, I decided, once and for all, that I am going to try every one of Henry & Wanda’s twenty-something martinis. Not all in one night, of course, though that might be interesting. I flipped over the menu and decided I would start from the back of the list.

So I got a Strange Brew. The only way I can describe the Strange Brew is as a root beer float with alcohol in it. The actual contents are Stoli Vanil, Rootbeer Schnapps and cream.

With the second martini I was a little less particular. I just told the bartender, Jay, to give me the next one on the list. This one was called a Jack Lemon. I didn’t take the time to write down what was in this one, but if you ask me it tasted pretty much just like vodka lemonade.

But as I downed the second martini, I vowed that never again would I try to do two in one night. I’m such a lightweight. Although I think the huge plate of seasoned bar fries I ordered helped keep me a little more grounded. They came with pesto and parmesan cheese to make them appear more sophisticated, but I still prefer good old ketchup any day.

Despite the thrill of trying new drinks, I definitely won’t be buying two martinis at once at Henry & Wanda’s ever again. It pretty much drained my wallet. I looked at the tab briefly, laid down a twenty, and Jay quickly informed me that I was short. I was short? How could that be? I glanced at the bill again and winced as I realized I owed $23, plus a tip. I laid down a second twenty, calculating it in my head. It was $9 per martini and I had two martinis so that was only $18. Oh, yeah, the fries. That added another $5.

So my advice is stick to one martini if you’re going there, or get whatever drink is the night’s special. Or just be less picky and drink beer. I will admit, Henry & Wanda’s has the most expensive martinis of any place I’ve ever been to. But they taste so good!

You need to get out more. If I recall H&W serves their matinis in a 10oz glass. The product used was probably premium. I would expect to pay 9,10 or more in a nice bar/lounge.

H&W blows......I have totally boycotted that dump.......they are a wanna be high class bunch of loosers...........
The problem there is too many bosses and no employees...........the service is so bad now......
I know I used to go in there when they had that awsome chief......I think her name was Amy.....
the place has gone WAY down hill since she left............

I have never been to Henry and Wanda's because I am relativelly new to the area, but $9-10 for a martini is nothing. Go to any bar in Milwaukee or the surrounding areas and that is what you will pay. Sounds like some of the people are saying it is the atmosphere that isn't cutting it, which is why it seems a bit expensive. If you are a martinit drinker, you should expect to pay that amount at any place, think of it, it is straight booze!!!

Gee guess I should have read my comment before posting, a few spelling errors, I apologize!!

VRC has $3 martini's on Friday nights.

Went to Henry and Wanda's a few weeks ago with a group of co-workers. The martini's were fine but the food wasn't very good. I had the shrimp with soft shell crab. One of my shrimp was 1/2 raw. Someone else sent their entire plate back and their chocolate cake was dry and stale tasting. For what it cost I won't be eating there again.

Wow Abby....and tell us how you really feel!!
People need to remember that H&W's has been through an ownership change in the last few years and though the new owners dont have that "restaurant-bar expertise and experience" that the former owners had, they are trying. Thank god for Jason the lead bartender-night manager.....without him the place really would be just another corner bar. Jay is the best martini maker in town or even in the milwaukee metro area and i am proud to call him a friend. And yes the food is a bit on the pricy side but with atmosphere, ambiance and people watching....that is what you pay for in places like this. I still feel that H&Ws is the place to go to be seen and see.....probably the most high end place in Racine.

I don't mind paying alot for food if it tastes good but to pay that kind of money for undercooked and stale food is another story. It will be a long time before I go there again to eat.

We all know this AMY because she was on the front page of the food section in the JT(about a year ago). This article was the reason we went in there. After our meal she came out and got a standing ovation………..Everyone (table of 10) at our table loved every dish.
I believe those of you who would like to slam her are just jealous or have your head up the booty of one of the 5 owners for the dump they call H&W's.
You sound like another WANNABE high class looser……..
I know the head chief of the RCC and Meadowbrook CC... and who doesn't know the chef of the Corner house…….I like to compliment the chef when the food is good………..so yes I know a few chef's……………….

Ok, i would like all of you guys to leave old Amy out of the conversation. She hasn't worked there for 9 months now and is glad to have that awful experiance behind her. i know her well and she hated that job. Plus she really didn't like all of the publicity that came with that job because she is acually pretty humble in person. She has lots of friend in the resturant buiseniss who are chefs and managers and doesn't consider herself to be the hottest ticket in town. As for the comment about stealing recipies from tv, that was not something she'd do. While she does enjoy those progams, she'd never rip off something from tv. She may have been inspired by a technique or ingrediant, but cooking is an art and artist find inspiration in everything. I don't know who is in control of the kitchen now, so maybe the food has changed since she was there, but cut her some slack. She really just wishes she would stop being associtated with that place. She's on to bigger and better things now and has moved on. So should everyone else.

P.S I hope to god they are paying jason well. He is the only reason that the place stays busy during the week. He wrote alot of the martini menu that everyone loves so much and he's a great, fun person. i think that he's one of the only reasons to go to h&w's.
