Why does Racine feel safe?
Posted by: Rob on October 30, 2007 at 2:18PM CST

Have you ever noticed that despite all the crime reported, walking around in Racine feels pretty safe? Why is that?

Maybe it's because crimes are often against people the criminal knows.

I've never felt Racine was a safe city.

Where is this "safe" place you speak of Rob? It sure isn't the Racine I live in. The only safe Racine I ever see is in my dreams.

I feel more unsafe in Racine than either Milwaukee, Kenosha or Chicago. I consistently see gang-bangers at Regency and anywhere near Johnson's or the Zoo, I make certain my doors are locked.

I was on jury duty once and it went late. I was pretty frightened as I went to my car and the judge even offered to have a deputy escort us.

Racine -- safe? Not unless you're a gangbanger and are carrying...and even then someone from another gang may take you out.

During daylight hours I'm okay but I don't really like being very close to the Lake after the sun goes down.

Rob, either you have an armed guard or you're 6' 6" and look like a football player. But for us mere mortals, Racine is anything but safe.

Obviously some neighborhoods are in fact safer than others....

Another factor in feeling "safe" would be the ability to protect yourself (self-defence) which of course does not mean much when faced with armed or multiple attackers....

As in any city, anywhere (not just Racine), saftey is relevant to a number of different factors...

think1st....Parts of Milwaukee (north side) and Chicago (south side) make Racine seem like a nice walk in the park....been there.....done that....

I have to admit that i never felt unsafe in Racine. I dont live in the best of neighborhoods and not the worst. I grew up by Island park by Luthren High. I woudl walk around at night still do when i'm home.

When i was home this summer i went walking around in Island park and came across a couple of groups of young guys many i'm sure some would say that they were thugs by looking at them. When i walked by them they were very kind said hi and smiled. It really made me feel good. When you spend so much time just reading about the crime here and shootings there it was nice to be greated in such a way.

Outdoorsman -- touche'. I stand corrected.

But the downtown areas are not unsafe, as Racine seems to be.

I live on Park by St Cats and dont really feel unsafe.

I run a lot at all times of day and night. I have run down College, Villa and Park during both day and night and have never had a problem or felt unsafe. I will admit I am a large, fit man so I will give you that context for my experience. I have run down lots of the "bad" streets in Racine and never had a problem, including my most recent visit last month so I am not talking about years ago.

I am sure you could find trouble in Racine if you look for it, but most of the crime is against people the criminals know.

Posted by: thnk1st on October 30, 2007 5:56PM CST
Well, Hale Bopp, the statistics are definitely in your favor but with my luck, I'd be the exception and that small percentage of innocent victims.

I've never been mugged, though I'm the only male in my who has not, when I am in Racine my radar is on high alert.

Maybe you're running so fast that they don't think it's worth the extra effort ;-).

I feel very safe in Racine.

Even in these so-called terrible areas that people are claiming are full of gangbangers (mostly just teens acting loud) you more than likely will not be the victim of a crime.

Many of the shootings over the last few years are groups of young men going at each other and retaliating. Granted, that doesn't make for a safe situation, however, it does mean most "average" citizens who are not involved are not targets.

I've had this discussion with OrbsCorbs before that I feel there is a "perception" in certain places that it is going to be dangerous - when in reality you can go there and go to a store or gas station or drive down the street and - lo and behold - nothing bad happens.

Sometimes, the people there are even kind. Sometimes - the people there are just like the people everywhere else in the city. Some good. Some bad.

think1st - where exactly in Milwaukee were u ? Just curious.

Posted by: MauriceH. on October 30, 2007 8:32PM CST
Just "not knowing" some people does not make a situation unsafe - using that logic - the only way to feel safe would be to know everyone in the city.

Also , the notion that we would feel so much safer if we were all carrying weapons is quite contrary to the reports that show most crime victims know their attacker. Most crimes are the result of domestic or personal situations or grudges. In these cases, they are planned are frequently BOTH parties are ready for a confrontation or armed.

Maurice, the only area in Milwaukee that made me uncomfortable was around North Ave.

You are correct though. The typical folk in the neighborhoods are great. It's the street people that I believe you have to look out for. But the people who live there hate the crime too!!

Posted by: BigDog on October 30, 2007 11:05PM CST
Even if the crimes are against people the perp knows how safe can you feel seeing a crime. knowign that at any time a crime can be committed right in front of you by armed thugs. racine is like the trailer park of wis. even the good neighborhoods are not so good.
teens yelling at each other and at you even if they are not going to attack cant make anyone feel safe.
I hate shopping in racine and will go out of town to shop just to feel more comfortable with my family. if my kid disappears out of my sight in racine I have to say I get upset, in other places we don't have that fear. Even walmasrt on durand is a pit compared to ones outside of racine.
try taking a day trip to Grand Avenue mall in Milwaukee and see what a difference there is. or a walmart in a nice area even

Posted by: Gray Kitty on October 31, 2007 11:14AM CST
OrbsCorbs, that's rotten to the degree of WRONG that you recieved a ticket for being the victum of an attack just for using pepper spray, god I can't understand that. How crappy for you. Drop Zone, I thought you said that stuff was legal to use if it's just 10% I don't understand. Wasn't it self defense?

Just because someone says Hi to you as you walk by doesn't mean they are nice people. The minute you get passed them they could come after you and rob you. I had some friends who were in Florida during spring break and a group of 3 guys came up to them and were striking up a conversation and one asked for a cigarette which my firneds boyfriend gave him. He then asked for a match and he went to give him his lighter and 2 of the guys held him down, beat him to a pulp and tried to rape my friend Heather. Thank god someone in a nearby hotel saw this happening and a bunch of them ran down to the beach to assist them. Brian spent almost 4 weekd in the hospital and almost dies from his injuries. I trust no strangers when I'm walking at night or even in the day time. I say hello and look behind me as I pass.

One of the houses we lived in Racine, we sold and the man was murdered in it within a year. It was in the 1700 block of Park ave. I won't say the exact address.
It's bad everywhere!
In Madison a few weeks ago, I was dropping off my sister at night, 2 teenage boys tried to open her car door. Luckily it was locked. He then banged on the window and his friend kicked the car. They were obviously on drugs. Thank God I'm from Racine and always keep my car doors locked. I believe if he could have got in my car our asses would have been kicked.

Big Dog, I'm not sure I understood the Grand Avenue Mall comment. You feel safe ther? I was there about 1 1/2 ago maybe more and I felt it was just a larger scale Regency. Both very ghetto in my opinion.
I'm a pretty positive person, so as far as not feeling safe...Well I don't want to be a Wilma Worry Wart so I try to assume the best. However there are certain areas that I just stay out of or get out of as quickly as possible. For instance not a big fan of the area where Kinzie turns into 6th Street there by Lighthouse School or the Neighborhood Pantry. I'm VERY aware of my surroundings and have my foot on the gas ready to go when ever I'm there and there are many people.
I too live downtown and go to the restaurants and bars in the area @ night I always have my phone in one hand and my keys pointed in the other.

Been having problems with the blogs...anyone else?
Hadn't been able to access since yesterday. Now half my comment is cut off.
As I was saying.....
There is a fine balance between being a Wilma Worry Wart and being a realist. I don't care where I am, if I hear a noise in the middle of the night it frightens me. Crime happens everywhere even some of the nicest and priciest cities and neighborhoods of the world.

Sisterbelle: stay away from Allied drive !

And thats crazy about that man being murdered in the 1700 block of Park. I live in the 900 block of Park and to me the south end of Park Ave is much quieter and seems like there would be less crime/thugs/dope dealing/assaults/ ladies peddling their wares and other trash than like what we have between 7th and 14th.

Surely less nomadic renter trash south of 14th St.

Yeah, that really sucks OrbsCorbs. I am very sorry you got attacked, that's pretty awful. It's really not safe in this world. I'm very paranoid about walking alone. I will ride my bike, but walk, no.

Have to agree that Racine is in no way a safe place. Three of my friends have been jumped and rolled over the last three months, in one case I lost a tenant over it.. his girlfriend decided that it was safer to live in Milwaukee. Pretty sad, and obviously, as they were hit from behind, the cops couldn't do anything. We've taken to walking in tandem after dark. And this is a major street. So much for "revitalization".

Rob, Racine is screaming at you. Listen up!

Posted by: sigfan2340 on November 1, 2007 1:34PM CST
I have lived in Racine all my life, almost 32 yrs, and I remember in the ealry 90's riding my bike from Mt. Pleasant to the Lake and back, or riding the city bus in 8th grade to visit friends that lived near the court house. Today, I worry about my kids riding around the block on their bikes. They take a walkie talkie with them and either myself or wife has the other. Times have changed and so has Racine, we need to adjust to them the best we can...

Without sounding like a crazied nut the only way I feel 100% safe is when I have one of my firearms near by. I store them locked in a safe unloaded, but I a gurauntee that one of my mags is filled. If you think about it, citizens in Wisconsin have no way of defending themselves. This is an open invitation for crime. Thank Doyle for that and his Veto of the CCW.

They say call the cops if their are issues, well they can't be everywhere all the time.

Most of the time I feel safe during the day, but as an average sized woman, I wish that I could RUN when it was dark like Hale_Bopp, but I am afraid to do that even though I always carry my cellphone when I run and stick to populated areas...

Being rather new to Racine and living downtown near State & Main I was a little naive on a walk over the summer.
It was beautiful day and nobody (friends, son) was around so I figured I'd go for a nice long walk.
Went climbing on the rocks, up hills, everywhere and ended up near Dekoven Center and water treatment facility. Well at this point I had obviously ran out of my SmartWater and was dying of thirst. The only convenience store in the area looked a bit shady and I realized I was NOT in a very good area. As I started back home (I did go in to get a Gatoraide though) some guy started hootin & hollerin at me. (Yeah like that's gonna work idiots) I start walking in the opposite direction and notice them folowing me. I see a guy working the yard @ a church and stop to talk for a minute (hoping the guys would go the other way) and he even tells me I'm not in the best of areas and I might want to take this street and get out of there.
I obviously made it home fine and was inn a safe area in no time, but it made me think. You are never to far from a 'shady area' here in Racine. And you can never be too careful. You bet I know which block to stop at when I'm walking now.

I have always felt safe in Racine, but I have to say that it does not particularly matter which side of town you are on at what time, it all depends on where the stupid people are. 4 years ago I was attacked for absolutely no reason by a girl I have never seen before, maybe I shouldn't have been nice to the girl, it seems kindness makes people seem weak, but as I was walking away after she said she was cool with me the girl grabbed me by my hair, needless to say we both ended up in the hospital, though hers was flight for life to friedert, I got off on self defense even though her injuries were alot more significant and life threatening, it was self defense because I did not provoke the incident and I never said anything before during or after to provoke a fight. This happened in a rather good neihborhood at 8pm with ppl in the nearby businesses and not one person called the police, it sickens me to think nobody really cares for anyone anymore, I suffered a stab wound to the femoral artery and was bleeding to death. But you know what I will be that person that if I see a violent crime in act I will do something about it, not just turn my back and ignore it. It doesn't matter where you are or at what time, bad things can happen to anyone regardless of whether or not you know the person doing it.

Posted by: liliangel30 on November 4, 2007 4:10AM CST
Rob you need to wake up and realize alot of things, I am a crime victim and I had no intention of hurting anyone, but I will defend myself no matter what. I'm not sure where you are walking around, but it seems these days nowhere is safe as long as there are stupid people.
