Douse water park idea
Posted by: Mike Moore at 11:52AM CST on June 30, 2008
From our Letters section:

Just over a year ago, I ran for Racine City Council. One of the ideas I promoted was creating an “off the grid” community on one of our “brownfields” (vacant, former industrial sites) to test and demonstrate alternative energy technologies in this climate.

Such a project would draw innovative minds to our community and spur development and local “green” manufacturing, which is the industry of the future. The 15 percent of eligible voters who showed up for that election said, no thanks.

Now I see where Racine is considering building a water park. Great idea. If you can’t find a job, the first thing you’re going to want to do is go swimming. Not to mention all the tourists who will skip the Dells and come here instead. Which will boost our economy immeasurably.

Block Parties
Posted by: KMK at 8:26PM CST on June 26, 2008
I was watching T.V. and there was some cooking show episode about foods that would work well for a block party. I live on the north side of Racine, and have lived here for many years. I have never been to a block party or ever heard of one happening in my block. I don't know if it's
because we're all too busy, lazy, or just don't care about our neighbors. I envy communities who annually have these block parties. I think it would be a growing experience for everyone. However, many of the people in my neighborhood are retired or are on vacations every month. Still I find it hard to believe we could not find one day out of 365 to have a block party. I was wondering if any other parts of Racine has block parties.

once again, the thugs are making people not be able to do what it is that we want to do.  they want to have gun fight at the beach. they want to rob people and beat them up in your art district. i am not going ot call you names or insinuate that you party too much but exactly what are you doing? regency mall is a cess pool of gang activity, the lake front is getting to be that way, you cant walk downtown at night thru your art district unless you have someone or a group with you. now since you cut that nice big beautiful tree down, cant you see this? i know you read these or have your grant writer do that, so why arent you doing anything? should we take matters into our own hands? what if my kid get's shot while we are playing on the beach? gary it's getting worse. it's getting hot out now so it really is going to get a little more insane here. do the right thing. fire your grant writer and get some police here. not jsut the ones that we have now but some ball busters that arent afraid to get in the mix. do it before someone else's kid get's hit by a stray bullet.

Vacation Bible schools
Posted by: Mike Moore at 5:53PM CST on June 25, 2008

Everywhere I drive around the city lately, I see signs for Vacation Bible School.

Each church has a religious-themed pun for a title, like "Surfin' Through the Scriptures" or "SonWorld Adventure Park".

Having grown up in the boonies, where summer camp meant canoeing and crushes on the female counselors, the church kind was new to me.

What do kids get out of these weeklong events? Do they have fun there?

United Way is back in business
Posted by: Mike Moore at 5:47PM CST on June 18, 2008

This press release submitted by Lisa Koenen:

United Way of Racine County located on the first floor of the Lincoln Building at 2000 Domanik Drive along the Root River appears to be the only business in the county that was seriously affected by the flooding in Racine last week. The offices sustained extensive damage when the river reached record levels and flooded the Lincoln Park, Island Park and Spring Street areas of Racine.

Carpeting, tile and dry wall in the offices all must be replaced, and many pieces of office furniture will be discarded. “We expect it will be four to six weeks before we can return to our space.” said Dave Maurer, United Way executive director.

As of Tuesday, June 17, Lincoln Lutheran has provided United Way with temporary space on the fourth floor. “This allows us to be nearly fully operational with these office and meeting areas. Staff have continued with meetings and events as scheduled for the most part and kept up with email communications remotely,” Maurer said. With the phone system back in place, staff can now be reached by leaving voicemail messages. The United Way staff directory is listed below for your convenience.

United Way has been in contact with the American Red Cross and other emergency services and is planning to offer ongoing basic needs assistance to Racine County residents who have suffered flood damage when those other resources have expired. “While we have some operational disruption, we anticipate the longer term needs of some families will require our support and we will be there to help as we were with Katrina victims who landed in Racine a few years ago,” said Maurer. “Some flood victims are our neighbors down the street.”

In addition to our deep gratitude for the continued support provided by Lincoln Lutheran and their staff, United Way extends sincere thanks to our friends at Great Northern, Merchants Moving and Storage and Home Depot for the incredibly quick responses and understanding of some of our most immediate needs.

With our recent 2 murders in 48 Hrs, one would think this would be a time for unity. We need to come together to save our vunerable, misguieded, saveable youth. Its going to take all of us putting as much time and effort as we can into bringing awarness to are youth of the severity of there actions, and what it means to take a life.

R.I.P J-BLACK, WE WILL MISS U BUT NOT FORGET YOU. What are we going to do about these kind of sense less murders. It is our fault, this is our community. Every person in Racine is in your community which makes them our responsibility. You have to blame yourself for what you didnt do.We need to learn to help and love everyone. These kids are in the streets in gangs because we dont care, we are not holding ourselves accountable. They need us, we can solve these problems. It might be hard but together we can do it. Just have faith and grow to be color blind, we are all in the same boat here. "

Lifes most urgent question is what are you doing for others". MLK

What do you think the problem is?
What do we need to do?
How do you feel?

Am I wrong?
Posted by: KMK at 8:26PM CST on June 13, 2008
As you know I work in the mall at a retail store. Many of our customers shop with their children. We constantly get parents who let their kids run around our store yelling and screaming. They touch everything and climb on our fixtures. It's a hazard to let them climb these fixtures, because it can fall on them. So, I tell the children not to play on them and to be careful. Some parents realize their kids are causing a small  disturbance and quietly take their kids hands and continue shopping. However, today there was a group of 3 children running and screaming  dropping clothes on the floor. I walked up to them and told them nicely they needed to stop and be a little more quiet. Their mom gave me a dirty look and yelled at me for "yelling" at her kids. She said they weren't causing any harm and I explained to her what they were doing and she just told me "kids will be kids" and that I should mind my own business and do my job. Is it okay to tell someone's kid to be quiet and
stop making the place a mess?

The sky this afternoon......
Posted by: marriedretiree at 3:16PM CST on June 12, 2008
Wondering if anyone saw the sort of horizontal rainbow in the Southwest sky around 12:30 this afternoon? It sure was interesting and something my Husband and I have never saw before. Anyone up on this topic who might have an explanation for it? I downloaded a photo of it, waiting for approval.

Need a contractor to deal with water
Posted by: Mike Moore at 6:18PM CST on June 11, 2008

After our online discussion about sump pumps, which made it into my column, a Racinian named Cindy called with water problems of her own.

She can't get online right now but needs recommendations on a trustworthy contractor to look over her leaks and install a sump pump or whatever other equipment would help.

Any suggestions for her? Please be honest; this is not the spot to simply make a free plug for your own company.

My sump pump worked overtime
Posted by: tenspeed at 7:53AM CST on June 11, 2008
I had my basement dug up and a sump pump put in in March of 2007. It has worked wonders for my basement. When I moved into this house, all they had was a 2" wide trough around the whole basement at the bottom of the wall. This trough led directly to my floor drain. It worked somewhat but when it rained real hard or constantly for a couple days the trough would overflow and water would get on the drywall that was installed some years before, which caised mold to form at the very bottom of the wall. During last weekends storms I had absolutely no water in my basement. The sump pump crock was filling fast and it was pumping every five minutes or so. As of today it is still pumping water out because of the saturated ground.

Donations for Forgotten Towns Displaced Families
Posted by: SarR at 9:44PM CST on June 10, 2008

The town of Rock Springs and other small towns are under 7 Ft of water. There have been so many displaced families who have lost EVERYTHING they own.

My brother lives in Rock Springs with his wife and 6 children. They had no warning to get out Sunday night as waters started to rise and had time to only pack a garbage bag of clothes for the children. Everything else was left behind. (Honestly, who thought it would get as bad as it did!) They are now hold up in a cramped trailer on high ground.  The only service available to displaced families such as themselves is a Reedsburg elementary school that is offering cots and food. (Keeping in mind Reedsburg is flooded too and a lot of people that sought refuge on higher ground may be blocked from getting there by road closures)

Several other families have similar stories and yet their stories go unheard. There is so much focus on the tourism district that these towns are being forgotten not only by the media but by the Red Cross, FEMA and other such organizations.

They need help. I decided to take a collection of items and I'll be driving up there Saturday morning. Things I am looking for are toiletry items, cleaning supplies, comfort items for children, giftcards, shoes, clothes, etc. If you have anything you could donate (that will fit in my van!) please contact me.

Is a sump pump worth it in older homes?
Posted by: Mike Moore at 12:38PM CST on June 9, 2008

Our West Racine house was built in the 19-teens and, as such, doesn't have drainage tiles or a sump pump or anything. I've been told it's hugely expensive to go in retroactively and put a system like that in, but with the crazy rains we've been getting I at least want to investigate it. We got lucky this time, but we got a small amount of water in the last big storm.

What does everyone else do?

Children's Clothing consignment Shop
Posted by: bgmgirl at 3:21PM CST on June 4, 2008
I want to make others aware of the Children's consignment shop located on Lathrop avenue before you get to Taylor, called Children's Cupboard.  One would think that buying someone's 2nd hand clothing or toys would be a good way to save money.  Well, speaking from experience, it is not!!!  A few ladies from our church brought many items into the store last summer and have yet to get paid for them.  When one of the ladies called the owner of the business, she was told that she could not pay her the small amount that she owed because she had an extremely high electric bill and her overhead was about ready to make he go bankrupt.  This is absolutley pathetic considering all she owed her was about $20.00.  It is not the consigners problem how much "overhead" the owner has.  She should keep her end of the contract.  My friend had taken about 50 items into the store and her "share" came to only $20.00.  I have shopped in this store and I have found better quality and prices at Goodwill.  I am sending this email as a warning to all of those who are considering shopping or even consigning in that store.  Don't do it!!! And if you, the store owner are readying this, pay your consigners in a timely fashion.  A year to get money is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!  There is another consignment shop in Milwaukee called Children's Orchard.  They are GREAT!!!  They pay when you bring the items and they pay FAIRLY.  Spend the extra in gas and get your monies worth!!!

Healthy living... not so easy or cheap
Posted by: KMK at 6:47PM CST on June 3, 2008
I like to go grocery shopping once a week. I still live with my parents, but I buy my own food because we have different tastes. I try to buy
organic or healthy natural foods, but it's super expensive. I don't understand why it is so expensive. People say a sensible diet and
exercise is vital to a healthy life. A gym membership can cost you hundreds of dollars. Yes, you can run outside for free, but personally I
can't run well. My grocery bill is burning a hole in my paycheck, and I don't think I can afford to buy all healthy foods. I can buy 1 bag of
pizza rolls that will yield me about 5 servings at a cheaper price of 1 fresh fruit cup. If our society is becoming more obese shouldn't we make
healthy options more affordable?
