The Andes will be playing Saturday at Michigan’s Pub, 1300 Michigan Blvd., as part of the annual Thoughts for Food fundraiser which benefits the Racine County Food Bank. Tickets cost $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.
The Andes are an alternative/rock band from Racine with influences ranging from 1960s classic rock to ’90s rock bands such as Pearl Jam and Oasis. They have been playing together for three years and have had two consecutive appearances at HarborFest, in 2006 and 2007. Lead guitarist and vocalist Joel Johnson has been writing songs since he was a teenager at Park High School, and the idea for The Andes came while at school in Illinois. The acoustic demos he recorded on a four-track recorder were expanded upon by his friend Jazz Sommers in Minneapolis, where both had gone to college. Once back in Racine, Joel recruited his brother Nate as bassist and his old high school friend Tony Hetland to be the explosive drummer The Andes music required. Rooted in the songwriting traditions of John Lennon and Paul McCartney and given a more modern rock edge, The Andes combine the best elements rock music has to offer.
