Marvin and the Dogs, Saturday, Ivanhoe, 231
Posted by: Rob at 2:53PM CST on November 2, 2007

Marvin and the Dogs, regional rhythm and blues favorites, will perform from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at Ivanhoe Pub & Eatery, 231 Main St. The cover charge is $5.

Marvin and the Dogs cultivated a strong and dedicated following in southeastern Wisconsin, Door County and throughout Wisconsin. They were one of the most popular rhythm and blues and original bands in the Midwest from 1979 to 1985, largely due to the unique chemistry of talent, experience and personality each member brought to the group.

In 1985, the band members went their separate ways to explore other musical and business opportunities, but friendships and die-hard Dogs fans keep them together in spirit and occasional reunion shows. Marvin Dykhuis currently still plays lead guitar in limited performances with Tish Hinojosa in Texas and worldwide. Dykhuis also lends his fretwork on guitar and other stringed instruments to many other Austin-area groups as well as acting as producer and session man in his own, and other recording studios. Racine native and well-seasoned musician, Randy Glines, on bass guitar will be welcomed to the fold after bandmate John Redmann’s death in 2003. Glines is the regular bass player for the Cornell Hurd Band in Austin.

Mark Paffrath, who plays drums in the band, has pursued music in several successful duos, one of which was with fellow "Dog" Richard Holly forming the duo Paffrath & Holly. They performed the regional scene from 1991, released a CD together and still do occasional shows. Mark Paffrath performs regularly as a pop-folk solo in the region.

Richard Holly remains involved with music and has also earned higher educational degrees in his "other" profession of electronics and computer science. He currently performs locally and is working on a new solo CD.

Paffrath and Dykhuis comprised a WAMI-winning acoustic instrumental and vocal duo from 1977-85. Paffrath and Dykhuis will also perform as a duo from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Yardarm Bar and Grill, 930 Erie St.
