Wisconsin minimum wage rates go up today - Yippee!
Posted by: Questioning on July 31, 2009 at 9:50AM CST

The minimum wage is going up to $7.25 for most folks today, but before you start getting excited about all that extra money, keep the following in mind.

Many service-type industries (restaurants, stores, etc) pay the minimum wage to their entry-level employees. If these small businesses have to pay more to their employees, and pay a higher amount for the employer part of the SS, what do you think is going to happen?

Will these small business owners just "eat" the difference, or do you think they might raise their prices?

Independent business-owners will be affected the most. Expect to pay more for that pizza delivery, round of golf, and just about anything else.

I understand that folks need money, but minimum wage was NEVER meant to sustain a family.

Whoops, meant to post a link to the Department of Workforce Development publication.

Not only that, but whatever increased buying power people have will be offset by higher prices on the things they buy.

Exactly, ButtonBoy!

I know this sounds a little out there, but I think the minimum wage should be market-driven, not mandated by the government!

OR - the employers could just fire one or two employees to keep their costs lower, and everyone will have to work a little harder for that extra money. AND someone loses a job!

WOW - sounds like unintended consequences to me.

It is rather ironic, isn't it? A law that is supposed to help our most vulnerable workers may actually "help" them lose their job.

I really would like to get out of the pizza delivery game but finding other part time work is tough right now. The competition is high if any openings occur at all. Tips and business have been under normal trends for our place- deliveries are down but carry outs are up. I'm concerned for some of our drivers being able to keep their jobs due to the minimum wage increase. It'll be nice for some but not all.
I think I have mixed emotions on this one. Good thing I don't reason with them.

It's time the government get out of the private sector and allow business owners to decide what an employee is worth. If the employee doesn't feel they're making enough money, either ask for more money and or move on. I know that's easy to say, but as a prior business owner, I'm sick of all the government control.
