Exploring Your Blog Page
Posted by: Skeet on September 20, 2007 at 4:28PM EST
When you first glance at it, your favorite Journal Times' blog page may look a bit confusing. But take heart! Before you set sail on the page, clicking, commenting and posting...here are a few tips to help you navigate like a pro.

A) Along with areas for the newest  Photos,  Videos, Members, and Latest Tags, the content you see on this page is basically divided into four parts:

    1. Top Left ("Your Local Community"), you'll see news feeds organized by Racine's major geographic areas. Click here to read content that's really close to home.

    2. Below left ("JT Staff Blogs"), you'll discover popular topics posted by Journal Times writers you've come to rely on.

    3. In the middle of the page is everyone's favorite spot, the combined Community Blog Roll where your blog posts appear, and where you can freely comment on your fellow members' posts.

   4.  Top  Right is a hand-picked list of Blogs, each with a colorful icon, (organized by subject) where you are invited to post and comment on current topics that are on everyone's mind.

I sincerely hope this little tutorial helps you discover a more rewarding experience in the Journal Times community.

    Regards,
    JT Tech Guy

and I try to go to page 2 I get the,

For a brief time a few weeks ago, you could comment on the stories on the home page. I'm sure that that functionality works. Why doesn't the JT allow it?

Posted by: Anonymous on September 21, 2007 11:33AM EST
Hi Winger,

Commenting is available on articles at www.journaltimes.com. However, if you're not logged in or registered, you will be prompted to do so.

Thanks!

Hi Kay,

Can you tell me where the link is that you clicked on in order to be taken to the URL you posted above? That's actually the wrong link to Find Others. If you click on the Find Others link in the main navigation bar, you will end up in the right place and the pages will all work.

Thanks!

See if you can get the Journal Times to buy you a Nokia E61 and an Apple iPhone and try blogging and posting from that. It isn't easy!

Tab navigation is tricky on your blogger menu on Firefox (Ubuntu linux and OpenSolaris version) I have to move my mouse around the outside of the browser window and sneak up on the tab, otherwise it disappears before I get to it.

Beyond those issues, the site is good and I hope it stays relatively free of spam, negative kharma and abuse. If the site continues to grow in popularity, you might want to consider a blog platform and webserver built on a more stable and scalable operating system than Microsoft Windows, but it's working reasonably well so far.

Hi Parivrajaka,

Ubuntu Rocks! I run it at home myself.

However, I must admit that we don't "officially" support linux versions of browsers. I'm surprised though that there is that much of a difference in the way the Windows and Linux versions of Firefox work.

Hi JT Tech guy,
Are you aware that you can only see the first page of your friends in your profile.... when you click on subsequent pages you go to this link...http://www.journaltimes.com/shared-content/search/index.php?search=go&l=25&q=Search+JournalTimes.com
Just a search page. Can you check that out for us?

This is a great additon to the page, glad to have ya here.

Posted by: Kay on September 21, 2007 4:04PM EST
tech guy,
put your mouse on "My JT" then go over to tags and click that. Then choose profiles and click lean left. That will take you to page 1 of those listed as leaning left. When you try to click page 2 you get the page I refered to above.
Originally I tried a different tag, "left" and got 4 pages but could only access page 1.

Also, I run XP and the same thing was happening to me that was happening to Parivrajaka. It seems like it has stopped for now.

I hope they're paying you well because you're going to one busy dude here.

I take back my last statement. If I'm on my profile page I still have to move my cursor outside of the window and sneak up on the tabs under My JT.

You know for awhile I was thinking of this site as one of those old PC games where you had to figure your way out of rooms and collect clues to get where you needed to go.......it's sort of still like that.

Posted by: JT Tech Guy on September 21, 2007 5:06PM EST
Hi kkdither,

Is this happening when you click on the "View All of kkdither's Friends" link or when you click on the "Page 1 of 3" links?

It's definitely odd for you to be sent to the link you posted. Let me know exactly what you're clicking on and I'll dig into it.

Sorry I couldn't fix it right off the bat.

Hi Kay,

I can't say that I've figured this one out yet. However, I wanted to give you an update.

When I use the link you originally posted, I was able to reproduce the issue exactly as you described it; but, when going through the profile tag cloud, everything seemed perfect.

Did you get the original URL by going through the Tag page's Profile Tag tab? It's construction suggests that it came from clicking on something somewhere else.

Trust me, I believe you that there is a problem ( I saw it for myself using the originally posted URL). I'm only asking so we can get to the root of this quickly.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Kay,

I failed to address in my last email the navigation issue you mentioned.

I will pass this one along to the group that handles design and navigation. You mentioned that you are running XP. Are you using Firefox or IE as your browser?

Thanks!

Thanks for looking into it, JT Guy. I have heard this comment from other users too, so I don't think it is unique to me. Here is the lowdown: Click on "my profile" Click on "Friends" Scroll to bottom of page. Mine reads "Records 1-15 of 23" Underneath that, it says "page 1 of 2" Underneath that, if I click on page 2, I get the link I posted. Strange. Never can get to see page 2. I like to be able to use that page to see who is currently online. Hope that helps. I'm running xp, using firefox, if that matters.

JT guy, although I've had this problem many times, I have not been able to get into my profile today. I was earlier but now I can't, even though I just logged in, it's very frustrating to say the least. Thanks for listening.

Hi kkdither,

Hi Gray Kitty,

Hi Gray Kitty. What sort of error do you get once you've logged in and try to access your profile? Also, a couple of technical details will help me get to the bottom of things...

  1. Operating System

  2. Browser

  3. Are cookies enabled?

  4. Do you have a firewall (software or hardware)

Sorry to get so detailed. It just helps a bunch when trying to answer some questions.

Thanks!

JT I don't have any answers. I'm computer illiterate, but some days It will just keep telling me over and over, I have to log in when I have already. I also can't access my friends beyond page 1.

Hi kkdither,

Well, we've nailed down the problem and will be making the fix available to the public on Thursday. I'm sorry for the trouble. Thanks for reporting it! This is how we make it better.

Posted by: JT Tech Guy on September 24, 2007 2:03PM EST
Hi Gray Kitty,

No problem. Some days I wish I was computer illiterate as well. Let's try this...here are a couple of things that might get me the info I need (If you have time to stick with me on this).

  1. Do you know if you're using AOL (America Online)?

  2. Do you know if you're using an Apple computer?

  3. Lastly, is there someone who could help you answer these quesions as well as the ones I asked earlier?

Believe me, I understand the difficulty of getting the answers to some of these questions. However, the answers would definitely be useful in getting to the bottom of things.

Thanks!

Not a serious problemJTG, don't worry about it. Appreciate your help. Please keep a current blog available. This is a great addition to the website. There are still many little quirks that need sorting out. I find random ones from time to time.

Hello Tech Guy, my question to you is why do we need to continually refresh the page for blog comments to be updated? I don't recall ever doing so on the old site.

Posted by: JT Tech Guy on September 28, 2007 3:02PM EST
Hi Kcin97©,

In order to aid performance, we cache various pages throughout the site. One result of this is that (sometimes) it takes a minute or two for updates to be seen.

That having been said, I'd still like to know the details so I can investigate the possibility of some other cause for your experience. What browser are you using and on which pages are you experiencing the issue....comments on blogs or comments on news stories on the jt.com home page?

Thanks!
JT

Posted by: Kcin97© on October 1, 2007 4:10PM EST
I use IE and I have to refresh on anything - comments on blogs, comments on news stories. The big annoyance lately is that the comments on new stories sometimes disappear until I scroll over them. It's crazy.

Posted by: OrbsCorbs on October 2, 2007 11:55AM EST
I use Firefox & IE7 and have the same problem as Kcin97©. Pages often load/refresh excruciatingly slow, or freeze up entirely.

Also, videos I have uploaded are visible to me when I log onto My Profile, but not to anyone else, nor myself if I just click on my name or avatar.

Firefox and IE
XP Pro
Cookies enabled
Norton Internet Security (no hardware firewall)
Time Warner Cable Road Runner
PC is my own build but standard stuff
I'm using Norton and Google toolbar ad and pop-up blockers, but disabling them doesn't improve performance.

Thank you.

JT Guy - When I enter a new blog thru "My Profile" it comes up on the "Blogs" page alright, but there is no section at the end to enter "comments" to the blog such as I am doing now. See my new blog "Why Stay" by MC. Thanks.

JT Guy - Never mind, it just cleared itself up (or did you do that?)

JT Guy - New question; I have the "hold comment for approval" (or something like that) box checked and show some comments have been submitted, but I don't understand how I "approve" them and release them so they show on my blog. Thanks, MC.

Hi Kcin97©,

We spent a good deal of time yesterday looking into this one. We definitely know it's happening; but, we haven't yet identified the cause. As soon as we do and have it fixed, I'll let you know.

Thanks for reporting it.

Posted by: JT Tech Guy on October 3, 2007 11:20AM EST
Hi OrbsCorbs,

The first issue of load time is likely advertising related. Since you use Firefox, you can see which requests are hanging in the Status Bar. We are working to eliminate troublesome ads and hope to have the issue eliminated soon.

The second issue of your video not showing up may be one of moderation. All videos are moderated by JT staff. I've sent an email to make sure there are no stragglers in the queue.

Thanks!
JT

Hi MC,

Go to "My Profile". Click on the "Blog" tab. Then, in the gray box where "MC's Blog" is listed, click on "Comments". In the left rail, click on "Manage Comments". This is where you accept or reject comments.

However, it doesn't look like you have this blog set to moderate comments. In the same left rail where you clicked "Manage Comments", click on "Comment Settings". On this page consider the second and third checkboxes. "Comment Moderation" needs to be checked to allow you to approve or reject them. "Send an email notification" will notify you every time someone leaves you a comment.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kcin97©,

I just checked your profile and was able to view both the dashboard and profile. Hopefully it was a short term glitch. Are you still experiencing the issue?

Nope, it's okay now, thanks!

Posted by: OrbsCorbs on October 3, 2007 12:57PM EST
JT Tech Guy,

Thank you very much.

I doubt that the video problem is a moderation one, though. I mean, one vid is of a squirrel and the other is a wrestling match, neither of which is offensive. I had these vids uploaded for weeks and they never appeared on my profile. I took them down and reloaded them numerous times. The current ones were uploaded last week.

Thanks again.

Posted by: OrbsCorbs on October 3, 2007 1:38PM EST
JT Tech Guy,

Below are screenshots of my video problem.

When I log onto "My Profile" and click on "My Videos", this is what I see: MyVideos

When others check out my profile, though, this is what they see when they click the "Videos" tab: Videos

Posted by: OrbsCorbs on October 3, 2007 1:43PM EST
Oh, and the big hangup on pages loading seems to be "Connecting to afe.specificlick.net..."

Thanks again. Sorry for all the posts.

JT Tech Guy-
Sorry to bug you again, but today, I am asked to login to the JT site and never once had to before. Just for more info, I did not clean out my cache or my cookies.

Posted by: JT Tech Guy on October 3, 2007 4:56PM EST
Hi OrbsCorbs,

I'm sure it's not because of offensiveness. It' may just be that it hasn't come out of the moderation queue. An actual person has to watch all the videos and approve or reject. I'm still trying to find out for sure.

specificlick is DEFINITELY one of our problematic ad providers. Hopefully it will be removed soon.

Hi Kcin97©,

Interesting. Did it let you log in OK?

When you log in, if you check the "Remember Me" check box it should remember you for up to 30 days of no activity. If you don't, it will forget you the next time you close your browser.

the pic on my profile is of new bleeding hearts, but when i clicked on one of my posts through the list of community blogs my pic of the meat eating dem came up for my icon.
I was trying to change my pic one night and it was not changing them immediately and I was getting a lot of error reports. But, then I thought it finally worked itself out.
Did I, in my confusion with the error posts, somehow load two photos for my icon? How did I do that and can you fix it?

Posted by: Kcin97© on October 31, 2007 12:45PM EST
JT Tech Guy-
When I click on the main "Blogs" tab, it redirects me to the News. This has been going on for 2 days. The only way for me to get to the blogs, is to click My JT and then click the blog tab under that heading.

Editing an entry you already posted can be done by:

Click on My JT > then My Profile > then Blog > then Past Entries. Choose the entry you want to change. Make the changes. Don’t forget to publish your changes by clicking the Publish button!

Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!

Dear JT Tech Guy/Gal:

I've noticed that I can no longer create paragraphs and/or spaces between them when I post in the news section. Everything in the blog section is OK. Then I tried with a different browser, and it worked.

If you use Firefox in the news section, it will not allow you to creat paragraphs. It will look like you have when you're typing out your comment, but it will appear all run together when posted. Internet Explorer, though, works fine.

Check out how my comments appear in this story:

Now that tech issues seem to ironed out for the most part, It's time to get a few blog moderators. I have moderated on my 2 other sites. It really cuts down on the BS here and especially the spammers that are slowly posting crap more lately.
Moderators can mainly delete spam and spammers accounts, and keep personal attacks at bay, and other minor things to keep the blog under control.
Thanks!

My chosen blogger ID is "philosopher". Sometimes my blog posts as from "Anonymous". One I posted just now was identifying me as "Loyal1" until it posted, and it did post as "philosopher". Why is this?

And, the antispam code is often confusing. Sometimes it seems to be demanding a space but that doesn't work. Sometimes you can't make out what a letter is intended to be. And I am uncertain if it is case sensitive. Why can't it be in plain-jane Latin alphabet characters clear enough for a seven year old?
