In Racine, several people have started programs geared at keeping youth from joining gangs and helping adults escape the cycle of crime. Every success is celebrated. To read more click on Day 6 at www.journaltimes.com/gangs.

Sammy Rangel and Damian Dolley were in gangs when they were young. Both credit prison with helping them turn their lives around. The two now work with Racine-area youth, trying to keep them from the destructive lifestyles they led. To read more click on Day 5 at www.journaltimes.com/gangs.

When
gang members are sent to prison, they don’t stop their activity. Gangs members
find each other in prison, but it is rare for them to cause any significant
trouble. The prison in Sturtevant is about to join in a program that aims at
helping gang members being released back into trouble-prone areas of Milwaukee
to become productive members of society, even if they don’t renounce the gang.
