Go see 'The Boys Next Door'
Posted by: B-Wi at 6:47PM CST on November 12, 2008

Anybody remember the 1990s Hallmark movie, The Boys Next Door?  The movie tells a story of 4 developmentally challenged men that live together in a group home. It starred Nathan Lane and Mare Winningham (doing a far better job than she did in one of my all-time favorite movies, St. Elmo’s Fire).

Well if you want to see it (or see it again), the Union Grove High School drama department presents the stage version this weekend November 13th – 15th.  There will be a performance each night at 7:00 and tickets are only $5.00!

Call 262) 878-2434 for more information.

UGHS cracks down on kids cutting class
Posted by: B-Wi at 3:22PM CST on November 8, 2008

There’s a new rule this year at Union Grove High School, and the kids aren’t very happy with it, according to the October UGHS student newspaper.

In the past, if a student skipped an entire day of school, they would have to serve an office detention. The new rule, enacted this year, states that for each class period missed a detention must be served.

Skipping 4 classes = 4 detentions

88% of the students polled thought the new rule was too extreme…

What do you think, too extreme or does the new rule sound reasonable?

Election Day Made Easy in Union Grove
Posted by: LuvUG at 8:54AM CST on November 6, 2008

My voting day experience was a great one.  How neat was it to see our Village President, Village Administrator and Trustees directing traffic?  They spent more than TWELVE HOURS out there making it easy for us to get in and out, so I just want to say THANK YOU!

Same thing once I got inside - there was a great team of volunteers ready to help both Union Grove and Yorkville voters.

Whether your candidate won or lost, at the very least let's appreciate the effort put in by all to make the experience of voting a pleasant one.

How many will turn out on Tuesday?
Posted by: B-Wi at 9:24AM CST on November 3, 2008

According to a recent Wisconsin Legislative Redistricting report, there are 3086 persons of voting age living in Union Grove.

How many of them do you think will vote in Tuesday elections? Will it be more than 75%? More than 90%?

Take a guess, I'll come back later in the week and tell you exactly how many voted!

How many school districts serve Raymond residents?
Posted by: B-Wi at 9:33AM CST on October 29, 2008

Not being a resident of Raymond or Union Grove, I'm not entirely clear on the history of public education in the area.

However, I do have a question - Do 3 school districts really serve the area? Isn't that confusing for residents?

Different school schedules, multiple entries on property tax statements, etc?

Or does it only appear to be confusing to an outsider?

Black Blizzard Warning?
Posted by: B-Wi at 10:22AM CST on October 13, 2008
Last night, I saw a documentary on the History Channel called Black Blizzard. It depicted how the over-planting of wheat in the middle section of our country contributed to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The farmers destroyed acres of native drought-resistant grasslands to plant wheat – a hot commodity at the time. Throw in a couple of years of drought, and the fields were left bare – perfect conditions for massive dust storms. These dust storms created their own destructive weather patterns for years.

As I drive down the country roads of western Racine County, I see more corn planted than I remember in my youth. Are farmers growing more corn to meet the demand for ethanol? Could we be facing a similar demise if we have an extended period drought?

Is ethanol a good alternative fuel? Why or why not?
